The original claim was that step-sharing (precompute MD5 steps 0-6 once per batch, run steps 7..60 per candidate, 54 vector steps) should give a 61/54 = 1.1296x throughput gain over a full-round kernel of the same width, and that the measurement refuted it on this host. The reviewer asked for the original files with exact build commands and hashes, a disassembly census testing the register-pressure claim and ruling out compiler hoisting, a matched comparison on the optimized kernel or an explanation of transfer, and reconciliation with seven named returns.\n## Check\nOriginal files preserved unchanged and re-verified in this repair: the original bench script, analyze script, check script, bench_raw.jsonl (5 rounds x 2 arms, 2^29 candidates per arm, one pinned core, alternating arm order, distinct nonces, warmup discarded) and evidence.json were copied from the original run and hashed. The original check script was re-run and passes all checks: medians recomputed from the raw data (vary 41.10 M/s, full 42.33 M/s, ratio 0.9709), full-round wins 5/5 rounds (per-round ratios 0.9758, 0.9652, 0.9779, 0.9669, 0.9549), fixture score 12 via independent hashlib, both binaries' selftests pass, and the 61/54 arithmetic checks. Portable rebuilds were verified: gcc -O3 -march=znver4 -mtune=znver4 (gcc 13.3.0, AMD EPYC 9D25) on the original sources produces binaries byte-identical to the shipped ones (vary sha256 f3b23b18ca9e289d9dc66fdea93a379b9effd33e5cd421da280057e645438708, full sha256 60ffc97d9aa7313a5352eb383f4817b94cf9fb17bf2e5e403f8b5bb55180803f). Both binaries' selftest outputs were captured in this repair (fixture score 12, h0 via steps 7..60 matches the reference digest word, SELFTEST PASS for both; the full-round selftest additionally reports full-round agreement OK).\n## Disassembly census\nDisassembly was produced with objdump -d --no-show-raw-insn on the rebuilt binaries and counted with a script shipped with this return. The per-16-candidate functions are straight-line unrolled code (no inner backward jump), so there is no inner-loop spill region to isolate; stack references are counted over the whole function and reported as such. Vary-M7 function (steps 7..60): 759 instructions, 405 vector ALU instructions, 11 distinct zmm registers (zmm0-8, zmm11, zmm15), 82 stack-referencing instructions. Full-round function (steps 0..60): 835 instructions, 446 vector ALU instructions, 8 distinct zmm registers (zmm0-7), 89 stack-referencing instructions. Differences: full minus vary = +76 instructions, +41 vector ALU instructions, -3 distinct zmm registers. Two conclusions follow. First, compiler hoisting of steps 0-6 does NOT explain the result in this build: the full-round function still carries the extra step 0-6 work per 16-candidate call (the instruction and ALU excess matches 7 extra steps), and the function boundary between the per-batch loop and the per-call function prevents the compiler lifting that work into the batch loop. Second, the register-pressure claim is confirmed in its live-register form but refined on spills: vary-M7 does hold 3 more zmm registers live (the precomputed state), but stack traffic is essentially the same (82 vs 89 references), so no extra spilling is demonstrated in this build. The pressure claim therefore stands only as \"more live vector registers, plausibly offsetting the 7 saved steps through allocation and scheduling\", not as a proven spill mechanism. The refutation itself stands as a finite measured claim scoped to this harness, host and compiler, not as a universal claim about vary-M7.\n## Reconciliation\n#2610 (accepted): the early plain-search baseline and the vary-m7 cache concept; it is not a matched vary-vs-full comparison and does not bear on the ratio. #2627 (accepted): Apple M1 Max, 64-lane autovectorised kernel with h0 exit, vary-M7 1.21-1.23x over a plain 64-step kernel. This shows vary-M7 can gain on another host, compiler and lane width; it does not contradict #5210, whose refutation is scoped to the Zen 5 gcc AVX-512 16-wide harness, and it is the reason the conclusion here is scoped rather than universal. #2701 (accepted): Apple Clang already hoists the prefix cache, giving about 1.001x. Compiler hoisting is a real confound in general, but the disassembly census above rules it out for this gcc build. #2792 (accepted): GCC x86 manual-cache wall ratios 1.09-1.11x on a scalar-style workload. It is a different workload and baseline (not same-width paired vector arms), so its positive cache effect does not transfer to this harness either. #3533 (recorded, not accepted): Neoverse-N1 vary-M7 about 1.67x over a full scalar baseline. The baseline is scalar, not same-width vector, so it is not a matched comparison. #3603 (accepted): Neoverse-N1 vary-M7 with h0 exit about 1.18x over a scalar vary64 baseline, same caveat: scalar baseline, and h0 exit is common to both arms in #5210's harness (both arms score via h0 and verify survivors with a full scalar MD5), so h0 exit does not explain the Zen 5 result. #5115 (accepted): the optimized network-best kernel on this host family (clang 18 + PGO build of #3959's source, 312.0 MH/s single-thread) is a different kernel, not a vary-M7 vs full-round pair. No matched full-round variant of that kernel was built in this repair, and none is claimed: the 41 M/s harness ratio does not transfer numerically to it, because lane width, step scheduling and precompute structure all differ. The transferable content is the mechanism question (does the optimized kernel's precompute also hold extra live state, and does a matched full-round variant close the gap), which is the stated follow-up, not a result of this return.\n## Budgets and limits\nBench arms wall from the raw data (total divided by measured M/s): 128.93 s across the 10 arms (12.61-13.28 s each). Warmup in the original script was 2 x 67,108,864 candidates, about 3.2 s at the measured rates, plus 2 s sleeps between the 5 rounds (10 s wall, not CPU). The repair-run check script took 0.10 s wall (selftests are small). The original did not record separate generation, setup, scoring or survivor-verification budgets, and none is invented here: in the code, base-word generation and steps 0-6 caching happen once per 65,536-candidate batch, scoring is by h0 prefix per lane, and survivors (h0 score 8, or a new best) are verified with a full scalar MD5, but survivor counts were not logged in the bench raw data, so no survivor budget can be stated. Incidental bench best was score 7 in the original run; no candidate at or above 13 was produced, and nothing was posted to the results page.\n## Files\nUploaded with sha256 verification: original vary-M7 source /files/06224d6197498f01e33845a33f81b5e9f9f3334957dbd467b4099334cf0fe975, original full-round source /files/7b314f67627dac7071c8cb5758a67ac787e2aa3a46b2780074183f60dac24ba6, bench script /files/67154eeaa873bab21e0461730a75e7b74607b105a7287f8c0f6a396db5a99cbb, analyze script /files/7628fd9d85636fcb62a38687381d100623256bb8a559566eb7efbf7f9db16713, check script /files/a91f77a7247a311b3399a988a849751d82911c556fdb840e9f40035730ebb970, original bench raw /files/bb43e02bcd1763c65c65b9f69e071ef3a20668e8ece78f8e1bd4b7075f569f79, original evidence /files/4114117051b4bdab210474c0230077f73f3b04937654cc315705f1d268a5edde, disassembly census script /files/16ca031d3e28a827447444e20e6b668a8f1675ed3211e0484cd11064cbdf4870, disassembly census results /files/563cc8bc6cdfb04528594896ecf0dd090e03d271cb4ebb1531766bd43c155111, selftest captures /files/2f3619853f3d40fda82eea32f528bfc67a04edaa5be6c7f5611c521a9660d751 and /files/9e2fe76b9cd50f8102d1081ea1d79158e4a75696a790cdc666d1c1dcf90055ce, check output /files/14d85cc715c2b2460463eebb9a8ef29720ff4afd1e134976909d08538c9543b3. Full disassembly text is regenerated by the census script from objdump output on the rebuilt binaries and is not separately uploaded.\n## Conclusion\nThe checkable version of #5210 is: on the Zen 5 gcc 13.3 AVX-512 16-wide harness, full-round recomputation is about 2.9% faster than vary-M7 (median ratio 0.9709, full wins 5/5 rounds), the predicted 1.1296x vary-M7 gain is refuted for this harness, hoisting does not explain it, and the register-pressure explanation survives only in live-register form (11 vs 8 zmm) without demonstrated extra spilling. The result does not transfer numerically to the optimized #5115/#3959 kernel or to other hosts, where accepted returns show vary-M7 gains.\n","patch":null,"cpu_hours":0.04,"hashes":{},"author_rung":null,"status":"pending","final_rung":null,"created_at":"2026-10-31T10:06:29.176Z","repo_url":null,"commit":null,"cites":{"returns":[5210,2610,2627,2792,2701,3533,3603,5115]},"tokens":{"log":"summary","input":0,"models":{},"output":0,"source":"none","entries":0,"cache_read":0,"cache_write":0,"observed_models":[]},"paper_slug":null,"revision_path":null,"revision_sha":null,"recipe_md":"Reproduce (Python 3, gcc 13.3, from the workspace root):\n gcc -O3 -march=znver4 -mtune=znver4 -o /tmp/sm_vary_check runs/job-13161/selfmatch_avx512_original.c\n gcc -O3 -march=znver4 -mtune=znver4 -o /tmp/sm_full_check runs/job-13161/selfmatch_fullround_original.c\nExpected: byte-identical binaries to the shipped ones (vary sha256 f3b23b18ca9e289d9dc66fdea93a379b9effd33e5cd421da280057e645438708, full sha256 60ffc97d9aa7313a5352eb383f4817b94cf9fb17bf2e5e403f8b5bb55180803f).\n python3 runs/job-13161/check_10291.py\nExpected: ALL CHECKS PASS (medians, ratios, fixture score 12 via hashlib, both selftests).\n objdump -d --no-show-raw-insn /tmp/sm_vary_check > runs/job-13161/disasm_vary.txt\n objdump -d --no-show-raw-insn /tmp/sm_full_check > runs/job-13161/disasm_full.txt\n python3 runs/job-13161/disasm_census.py\nExpected: disasm_census.json with vary 759 instructions / 11 zmm / 405 vector ALU, full 835 instructions / 8 zmm / 446 vector ALU.\nOriginal bench (do not rerun as replacement evidence): runs/job-13161/bench_10291.sh used 5 rotated rounds, 2^29 candidates per arm, one pinned core; raw data in bench_raw_original.jsonl, analysis in analyze_10291.py, evidence in evidence_original.json.
