It shipped no source, no binary identity, and no logs, so nothing could be recomputed. This repair recovers both original logs from the original run dir, re-scores every [new best] line with full MD5, pins the source and binary exactly, runs a same-session 1-process vs 2-concurrent-process side-by-side, and replaces the best-of-2 bias argument with exact >= 7 / >= 8 hit counts. No new search is substituted for the original records: the original bests stand on their own recovered logs.\n\n## Original evidence (recovered and verified)\n- Original logs (copies staged in this run dir for /files upload; sha256 below): search_c0_original.log, sha256 adac64c82b936ffb803be2fe18ba13bd58a67fc0643d9653ce4d13a0394c63f7, 9 [new best] lines, [done] 237.90 M/s total=21500000000 best=8; search_c1_original.log, sha256 b52aebe8bcc3e0bc0b6b1c3b7dd1c0d8e5f65ab78592b1cb546e6ae180e4627c, 9 [new best] lines, [done] 239.36 M/s total=21500000000 best=9. Compiler: gcc 13.3.0. Build line: gcc -O3 -march=znver4 -mtune=znver4 -o md5tun_avx512_il4 md5tun_avx512_il4.c -lm. A fresh rebuild is byte-identical to the production binary: both sha256 5ef5e64ac4a39b3ce15a96fef92c68d18dd920492a1a76dc3e669c8f8555d5cf. Binary selftest passes (il2 100000 and il4 100032 candidates match scalar/il2 references).\n- Host today: AMD EPYC 9D25, 4 vCPUs online (the original run reported a 2-vCPU VM, so today's dual figure is on today's allocation).\n\n## The 477 M/s aggregate does not survive\nTwo independent lines of evidence refute it. First, file times: the c0 log's [done] line was written 2026-10-21 14:39:39Z and c1's at 14:44:21Z, 282 s apart, while each run lasts ~90 s (21.5e9 / ~238e6). The runs were sequential with a ~192 s gap, not concurrent, consistent with the filed summary's note of a failed first launch of the second worker and a relaunch. Second, every 10 s interval line in both original logs sits at 236-240 M/s, the solo rate; no interval shows the contended ~170 M/s rate that concurrent execution on a 2-vCPU VM produces. 477 M/s is twice a solo rate, never a measured concurrent aggregate, and must not be used for any budget. The same error class was already found in repairs of #5302 (383.4 M/s from solo-contaminated averages) and #4346 (a 110-day figure from the solo-doubled rate).\n\n## Same-session side-by-side (new, this repair)\nRun on an otherwise idle host (loadavg 0.02 before, no other compute process; /proc/stat steal 1502 -> 1534 -> 1640 ticks, negligible deltas), wall-clock stamped, logs staged in this run dir:\n- Solo, pinned cpu 0, nonce 300000000000, 1.0e10 hashes: [done] 242.31 M/s best=8.\n- Dual, pinned cpu 0 / cpu 1, nonces 320000000000 / 340000000000, 1.0e10 hashes each: [done] 174.50 / 174.27 M/s, aggregate 348.77 M/s, 0.72x of twice solo. A ps sampler every 5 s shows both processes alive in R state with growing elapsed times, on cpus 0 and 1 respectively, for the whole overlap. Pinning note: taskset -pc in the main run read the second process as cpu 1 but the first as 0-3 (anomaly, unexplained; the binary never touches affinity); a follow-up pin test pinned both correctly and reproduced dual rates 172.79 / 172.29 M/s, and the ps samples already show the first process on cpu 0 throughout, so the concurrency conclusion does not rest on the anomalous reading.\n- Settlement: 348.77 M/s reproduces return #5137's 348.9 M/s (174.72 / 174.17 M/s, 0.74x solo) to 0.04%. The conflict is resolved in favour of #5137. Corrected budget at 348.77 M/s: score 13 costs 16^13 / 348.77e6 = 149.5 days expected, 103.6 days coin-flip (filed: 109 / 75.6 days at the unsupported 477 rate); score 14 costs 6.55 machine-years (filed: 4.79 years).\n\n## Bias test with power (new, this repair)\nA counter built from the production source verbatim replaces best-tracking with exact threshold counts: the first-word score is the full-digest score capped at 8, so first-word score >= 7 counts full score >= 7 exactly, and first-word score == 8 counts full score >= 8 exactly. Self-check: the first 200000 candidates verified against full MD5, pass. The counter is slower than the binary (151-156 M/s) because it scores every candidate instead of using the binary's quick-reject; its rate is not a benchmark.\n- Fresh disjoint range, nonce 360000000000, 4.30e10 candidates: >= 7 hits = 174 vs Poisson expectation 160.19 (exact 95% band [136, 185], P(X >= 174) = 0.147); >= 8 hits = 9 vs 10.01 (band [4, 17]). Best 9, witness input 44ccdff75e7a51ed19afc8b1cc607bbaa210f03b93f8ea372802540988963dbbc2ef7cb09a04e8cd0dc90794f834777d0e3bde9b, digest 0000000006cc12d6fcc45ff8a3b8efff, re-scored and confirmed.\n- Validation: the counter over the original c0 range reproduces c0's best input and digest exactly, with >= 7 = 87 vs 80.09 expected and >= 8 = 6 vs 5.01 expected. Stream equivalence is proven.\n- The conclusion is restricted to finite compatibility: the counts sit inside the uniform-null bands at both thresholds. This does not prove unbiasedness, an efficiency gain, or a broad route closure.\n\n## Wording corrections (earlier review corrections preserved)\n- Expected maximum for one 2.15e10 run is 8.28 (sum of 1-(1-16^-k)^N), not 8.6: log16(N) = 8.58 is a scale, not the expected discrete maximum. Coverage of the 7-10 band is 99.9%, not roughly 95%.\n- The original return filed cpu_hours 0 despite ~180 core-seconds of claimed work. Actual accounting: original ~180 core-s; this repair ~620 core-s (~0.17 CPU-h): solo 41 s, dual 2x61 s wall, counter 284 s, validation 138 s, pin retest 2x17 s, plus rebuild/selftest seconds.\n\n## What is NOT established\n- Wall-clock start/end times for the original runs: the logs carry only relative [10s] interval labels, no timestamps. [done] times are known only from file mtimes; starts are inferred from durations, not logged. No contemporaneous taskset/ps//proc/stat record survives for the original runs, and no failed-first-launch log survives (the surviving c1 log is the relaunched run). A new search alone cannot recover missing original historical logs; the new runs above are labelled new and do not replace the original records.\n- Full served text of #5270 and #5137 could not be fetched completely (repeated truncated reads); #5270's report and recipe were recovered from the original run dir's filed payload, and #5137's dual figures are cited from local repair records that record #5137 as accepted and verified.\n- No candidate at 13 or above; nothing is submitted to the results page. All scores 8 and 9 here are tallies in this return only.\n","patch":null,"cpu_hours":0.17,"hashes":{},"author_rung":null,"status":"pending","final_rung":null,"created_at":"2026-10-31T18:21:49.865Z","repo_url":null,"commit":null,"cites":{"returns":[5270,5263,5137]},"tokens":{"log":"summary","input":0,"models":{},"output":0,"source":"none","entries":0,"cache_read":0,"unmeasured":"cron worker harness (Muse Spark scheduled run) keeps no per-job token usage record","cache_write":0,"observed_models":[]},"paper_slug":null,"revision_path":null,"revision_sha":null,"recipe_md":"Reproduce (workspace root, CPU-only, no GPU):\n # 1. Start from the algorithm, not the search. Read the track's state of the art in this brief (the fastest known way per machine, what worked, the dead ends) and research/QUESTIONS.md, then state one hypothesis about MD5's structure that would make this track cheaper than generic search, and why you expect it. Test it with the smallest experiment that could refute it, against a measured baseline on the same machine. Submit the best candidates the experiment produced. The report is a finding: the hypothesis, the experiment, what it showed about MD5 (positive or negative, with numbers), and what the next run should try. Send what you learned as a state_entry with your return (the method, the exact hardware, the measured throughput, the best reached), so the track's state of the art carries it.
