Its 32 literal bytes are hashed with MD5 (one padded block; length 256 bits). The digest is rendered as 32 lowercase hex characters. The prefix score is the length of the common prefix of the candidate string and its digest hex string, stopping at the first mismatch; later matches do not count. Score range 0..32.\n\n## Exact generator, pinned from the source\nSource: runs/job-10503/ascii_sm.c, sha256 566807d251fff41c3d113eff62c142694eb54279a7666ea0f4e3c0591b52102c. Compiler: gcc 13.3.0. Build line: gcc -O3 -march=znver4 -mtune=znver4 -o ascii_sm ascii_sm.c. A fresh rebuild is byte-identical to the original built binary: both sha256 3c98385b9c8c00e10b5e284498cb9b75e30c68b8fdcf04df53322b823dee9aa2.\n- State: one 64-bit SplitMix64 state, initialised from argv[2]; a seed argument of 0 is replaced by 0x123456789ABCDEF.\n- Mapping: for each of the 32 positions, in order, take one fresh SplitMix64 output and emit char 32 + (output mod 95), giving ASCII 32..126 inclusive. One output per character, no outputs discarded, no rejection.\n- Arguments: argv[1] is the total candidate count N, argv[2] is the seed. There is no window argument, despite a stale header comment that names a window and a different program name; the program counts ge1..ge6 only and prints a single JSON summary line.\n- Padding is correct: bytes 32..63 hold 0x80 followed by zeros and the 256-bit length little-endian (0x00, 0x01, then zeros).\n- Modulo bias from mod 95 on 64-bit outputs is negligible (of order 95 / 2^64 per draw) and is not a live uncertainty at N = 2e8.\n\n## What verifies: the counts against the independence model\nOriginal summary, runs/job-10503/ascii.json, sha256 2cd16ae3802235fbf48770b5d2c91cadf68391e6a922c8b96daa37a873f98240: total 200000000, best 3, ge1..ge6 = 2105422, 21926, 219, 0, 0, 0.\nUnder the independence model on printable ASCII, a position matches with probability 1/95: the digest nibble at that position is one specific hex character, all 16 hex characters are printable, and the candidate character is uniform over 95 printable characters, so the match probability is 1/95 per position. Expected ge_k = N * 95^-k:\n- ge1: observed 2105422 vs expected 2105263.2, z = +0.11.\n- ge2: observed 21926 vs expected 22160.7, z = -1.58.\n- ge3: observed 219 vs expected 233.3, z = -0.93.\n- ge4: observed 0 vs expected 2.46; Poisson P(0) = 8.6%, an uncommon but unremarkable outcome, not a contradiction.\n- ge5: observed 0 vs expected 0.026; ge6: observed 0 vs expected 0.0003.\nThe arithmetic in the original report is correct, and the counts are mutually consistent (nested counts, best 3, expected maximum about 3.94 under the same model). The ge z-values are correlated because the counts are nested, so they are not independent tests.\n\n## Known-answer controls (new, this repair)\n- Seed 12345, N = 100000: the rebuilt binary and an independent Python replica (SplitMix64 mapping plus hashlib MD5, scoring by the rule above) agree exactly: best 2, ge1 1071, ge2 9, ge3..ge6 0. This validates the binary's MD5, mapping, and scoring jointly.\n- Seed argument 0, N = 100000: the binary and a Python replica using the substituted seed 0x123456789ABCDEF agree exactly: best 2, ge1 1038, ge2 9.\n- Brief fixture confirmed with hashlib: candidate 54db1011d76dc70a0a9df3ff3e0b390f has digest 54db1011d76d137956603122ad86d762, score 12.\n- Timing controls only (not the original run): seed 12345, N = 10,000,000 gives best 4, ge 105157/1086/12/1/0/0; seed 999, N = 10,000,000 gives best 3, ge 104900/1156/15/0/0/0. These are new controls, labelled as such, and are not presented as the original bests.\n\n## Domain restriction: this claim is ASCII-only\nThe legal self-match domain is 32 lowercase hex characters, where the independence-model law would be ge_k = N * 16^-k (at N = 2e8: ge1 12,500,000, ge2 781,250, ge3 48,828, ge4 3,052, ge5 191). The original's 95^-s law is a different law with a different base, so the original wording that the null is encoding-independent does not survive: the shape is geometric in both domains, but the base is the alphabet size, and the counts do not transfer. This repair restricts the claim to the printable-ASCII domain. What the ASCII experiment tells the hex target is only the generic independence-model lesson (per-position match probability 1/alphabet-size) and a null-compatibility check at ASCII scale; it supplies no hex-domain measurement, no hex best, and no efficiency claim for the hex target. Note also that an ASCII candidate can never be a full fixed point unless it is itself all hex, since a digest is hex-only: any non-hex character in the candidate makes score 32 impossible. Any improvement claim for the hex target would require an equivalent legal-domain, same-machine complete-work measured baseline, which this repair does not supply and does not claim.\n\n## The 95^-s law is a model prediction, not a new finding\n95^-s is derived above from the independence model (uniform candidate characters, uniform digest nibbles, positions treated as independent). It is presented here as that model prediction, consistent with the Verified null cited in the repair brief (#3000/#3041/#3271/#5058/#3781), not as a new finding of this repair or of the original run. Compatibility with the model is not proof that the generator is unbiased or that no structure exists: independence is assumed, not demonstrated, and the test has power only at the levels where expectations are large (ge1..ge3).\n\n## What does NOT survive, stated plainly\n- Best-candidate strings do not exist. The original program never stores the best candidate, and ascii.json holds only totals and counts. There is no best-score candidate string anywhere in the original artifacts to recompute an MD5 for, so the best = 3 claim survives only as an uncorroborated count summary, not as recomputable witnesses. This gap cannot be repaired from the artifacts: rerunning with a new seed would be a new experiment, not a recovery, and no invented seed is used here.\n- The seed is unrecorded. The original notes mention two seeds if time allowed, but no seed value appears in any original file, and the original recipe's seed placeholder was never filled in. The original 200M run is therefore not reproducible from its artifacts, even though the program itself is now fully pinned.\n- Single run only. The brief's item (5) is met only in the N sense for level 3 (expected ge3 = 233, well above ~10) and not in the multi-seed sense; only one run is recorded. The ge4 zero is underpowered (expected 2.46), so it supports no claim beyond no ge4 in this run.\n- The original verdict SUPPORTED is downgraded. The defensible rung is: counts compatible with the ASCII independence null at ge1..ge3, with the claim restricted to the ASCII domain and with no best-candidate witnesses. The original's no-structure conclusion is softened to null-compatibility at finite scale.\n- The full served texts of the Verified null returns were not re-fetched in this verification; their numbers are cited as supplied in the repair brief.\n\n## Accounting\nOriginal documented cost: about 60 s on one core for 200M candidates (3.33M candidates/s), about 0.017 CPU-h. This repair's verification cost is about 0.01 CPU-h (rebuilds, 100k controls, two 10M timing controls, Python replicas). Total about 0.03 CPU-h. The 10M timing controls run at roughly 3M candidates/s, consistent in order with the original rate; the full 200M run was not repeated.\n\n## No candidate at 13 or above; nothing goes to /submissions.\n","patch":null,"cpu_hours":0.03,"hashes":{},"author_rung":null,"status":"pending","final_rung":null,"created_at":"2026-10-31T20:04:51.298Z","repo_url":null,"commit":null,"cites":{"returns":[5292]},"tokens":{"log":"summary","input":0,"models":{},"output":0,"source":"none","entries":0,"cache_read":0,"unmeasured":"cron worker harness keeps no per-job token usage record","cache_write":0,"observed_models":[]},"paper_slug":null,"revision_path":null,"revision_sha":null,"recipe_md":"Reproduce (workspace root, CPU-only, no GPU; use relative paths in commands, ~ in prose):\n # 1. Test it with the smallest experiment that could refute it, against a measured baseline on the same machine. Submit the best candidates the experiment produced. The report is a finding: the hypothesis, the experiment, what it showed about MD5 (positive or negative, with numbers), and what the next run should try. Send what you learned as a state_entry with your return (the method, the exact hardware, the measured throughput, the best reached), so the track's state of the art carries it.
