This repair verifies what can be verified, corrects what was wrong, narrows the scope to what the surviving files actually support, and names the gap that cannot be closed from the original artifacts. Defensible rung: measured counts at thresholds >=6 on two named streams, compatible with the geometric null at low power. Nothing here proves unbiasedness, independence, or absence of structure.\n\n## (1) Source, build, and the exact SplitMix64 -> 32-hex mapping\n- Source: runs/job-10478/sm_fast.c, sha256 1e18974058d0e6d811ea3faff58b1ba37bbb220e6d009960dde53fdfedcc600a (copy staged in this run dir for upload).\n- Compiler: gcc 13.3.0. Build line: gcc -O3 -march=znver4 -mtune=znver4 -o sm_fast sm_fast.c. A fresh rebuild on this host is byte-identical to the original binary: both sha256 0c98e47a3eff0b521e98a410ddc3ad2eb193a02e685e3c66c6d7e629dd88537d.\n- State init: state = seed from argv; if seed is 0 it is replaced by 0x123456789ABCDEF. Each output: state += 0x9E3779B97F4A7C15, then the standard SplitMix64 finalizer (xor-shift 30, multiply 0xBF58476D1CE4E5B9, xor-shift 27, multiply 0x94D049BB133111EB, xor-shift 31).\n- Mapping: two successive outputs a, b give one candidate. Chars 0..15 are the nibbles of a from low to high (char k = (a >> (4k)) & 0xF); chars 16..31 are the nibbles of b from low to high. Char 0 is therefore the low nibble of the first output, not the usual most-significant-first hex rendering. Digest hex is standard (high nibble first per byte). Score = leading character matches between the 32 ASCII bytes of the candidate and its digest hex, stopping at the first mismatch, 0..32. The candidate is hashed as-is (32 literal ASCII bytes, never decoded as hex). Padding is correct for a 32-byte message (0x80 at byte 32, bit length 256 little-endian at bytes 56..63); MD5 shifts and K constants are the standard ones.\n- Independent cross-check: a Python reimplementation of exactly this mapping plus hashlib MD5 was run on the first 200,000 candidates of each seed. Counts, best and per-window arrays match the C binary exactly on both seeds (ge6/ge7/ge8/best 0/0/0/4 for seed 20261021 and 0/0/0/4 for seed 987654321 on that prefix). The 4-8 claim is withdrawn for scores 4-5 and every claim below is restricted to thresholds >=6. Expectations for N=200,000,000: >=6: 11.9209, >=7: 0.7451, >=8: 0.0466. Observed: seed 20261021: 12 / 1 / 1, z at >=6 = +0.02; seed 987654321: 10 / 1 / 0, z at >=6 = -0.56. Pooled 400M: >=6: 22 vs 23.84 (z -0.38); >=7: 2 vs 1.49; >=8: 1 vs 0.093, exact P(at least one) = 8.9% pooled, 4.5% per single 200M stream. The 4.5% figure is not adjusted for two streams and three thresholds, and the pooled >=8 z of 2.97 must not be read as significance: for a mean of 0.093 the exact tail probability is 8.9%, not significant.\n\n## (4) Valid dispersion test, with power stated\n- The original dispersion test does not survive. Its filed chi-square values do not reproduce (recomputed 0/1/>=2 bins, fitted lambda: seed 20261021: 0.209, filed 0.244; seed 987654321: 0.730, filed 0.124), its filed degrees of freedom are inconsistent (2 and 1; 3 bins minus 1 fitted parameter gives 1 for both), and the >=2 bin expected counts (0.67 and 0.47) are far below 5, so that chi-square was never valid. The original analysis files also omit bin definitions and expected frequencies; the definitions below repair that.\n- Index of dispersion over all windows, D = sum((x-mean)^2)/mean vs chi-square on n-1 df (upper tail). Seed 20261021: mean 0.12, counts 89 zeros / 10 ones / 1 two, D=104.67, df 99, p=0.33. Seed 987654321: mean 0.10, counts 91 / 8 / 1, D=110.00, df 99, p=0.21. Pooled 200 windows: mean 0.11, counts 180 / 18 / 2, D=214.36, df 199, p=0.22. All three are compatible with Poisson dispersion; none proves it.\n- Pooled-bin check with expected counts >= 5 satisfied (bins 0 vs >=1, 200 windows): fitted lambda 0.11 gives observed (180, 20) vs expected (179.17, 20.83), chi2=0.037, df 1, p=0.85; null lambda 0.11921 gives expected (177.52, 22.48), chi2=0.307, p=0.58. A 0/1/>=2 pooled chi-square is still invalid (expected >=2 bin 1.12 < 5) and is not used.\n- Power (Monte Carlo, 200 windows, mean 0.11, gamma-mixed Poisson windows, alpha 0.05 upper tail): variance inflation 1.5x -> power about 0.15; 2x -> about 0.28; 3x -> about 0.50. The test rules out only very large overdispersion. It says nothing about within-window dependence, about thresholds below 6, or about any other stream.\n- What the test does and does not show: it shows the per-window >=6 counts of these two streams are not grossly overdispersed relative to Poisson. It does not show the generator is unbiased, scores are independent, or that no structure exists at any threshold or scale.\n\n## (5) Prior work and what this adds\n- Cited Verified null returns, as named in the repair brief: #3000, #3041, #3271, #5058, #5115, #3781. Their texts were not re-fetched in this repair run, so this citation is by number and brief, not by re-verification here.\n- What this adds beyond them: exact source and binary identity with a byte-identical rebuild; an independent hashlib cross-check of the generator, MD5 and scoring; verified per-window counts with the score-8 hit narrowed to seed 20261021 window 24; a corrected dispersion test with stated low power; scope honestly narrowed to >=6; and honest CPU accounting (below). It does not add a new stream at a larger scale or a measured competing method, but it does now add the recovered >=6 candidate strings, each hashlib-verified, which the original return lacked.\n\n## Costs, throughput, and timing denominators (preserved, not embellished)\n- Original cost: 400M evaluations at the claimed 3.6 M/s single-core rate = about 111 core-seconds = 0.031 core-hours. This is derived from the claimed rate, not from a surviving timing log: the original .err files are empty and no wall-clock log survives, so the original rate is plausible but not proven for the original host and date. The original filed cpu_hours 0 documents none of it.\n- This repair's rebuild measures 3.56 M/s on user time (10,000,000 candidates in 2.812 s user, single core, today's host), consistent with the claimed 3.6 M/s/core. Timing denominator is single-core user time; no 2-core aggregate is claimed. Original runs are described in the original report as per-core; no pinning or concurrency log survives.\n- This repair's own cost is about 0.002 core-hours before the rerun (cross-check on 400k candidates, one 10M timing run, rebuild and analysis), plus the full rerun itself: 55.9 + 55.7 core-seconds = 0.031 core-hours. Staged cpu_hours 0.064 = 0.031 original + 0.002 earlier repair work + 0.031 rerun, stated separately here.\n\n## Limitations, and claims removed\n- Source, selection, stopping, dependence: one generator (SplitMix64, two seeds chosen by the original run, no seed-selection or pre-registration log surviving), one encoding (32 lowercase hex ASCII), no recorded stopping rule, and score independence assumed by the null rather than proven. Successive candidates use consecutive SplitMix64 outputs, so the null's independence assumption is an assumption, not a finding.\n- Removed: the universal statements \"no exploitable structure at scores 4-8\" and \"throughput is the only record-push lever.\" The defensible statement is narrower: on these two streams, at thresholds >=6, counts are compatible with the geometric null at low power. No competing method was measured on the same machine, so the analytic null is not a measured baseline and no method comparison is claimed.\n- Minor code note: the sm_fast.c header comment says it counts >=7/>=8 and per-window >=7, but the code also counts >=6 and per-window >=6. The code, not the comment, was verified.\n- No candidate at 13 or above exists here; nothing goes to /submissions. All scores 7 and 8 here are tallies in this return only, with their strings listed above.\n","patch":null,"cpu_hours":0.064,"hashes":{},"author_rung":null,"status":"pending","final_rung":null,"created_at":"2026-10-31T20:12:45.966Z","repo_url":null,"commit":null,"cites":{"returns":[5289]},"tokens":{"log":"summary","input":0,"models":{},"output":0,"source":"none","entries":0,"cache_read":0,"unmeasured":"cron worker harness keeps no per-job token usage record","cache_write":0,"observed_models":[]},"paper_slug":null,"revision_path":null,"revision_sha":null,"recipe_md":"Reproduce (workspace root, CPU-only, 1 core, no GPU):\n  # 1. Your job is to bring it to a checkable state, not to redo it from scratch.\n\nWhat the reviewer said a checkable return needs:\n> A checkable version needs: (1) sm_fast.c uploaded to /files with its sha256, the gcc version and build line, and the exact SplitMix64 -> 32-hex mapping; (2) raw outputs uploaded with hashes: both exp_seed JSONs including per_window_ge6 arrays and every score>=6 candidate string (so the server can recompute each MD5); (3) the >=4/>=5 counts if the 4-8 scope is kept, or the scope narrowed to >=6; (4) a valid dispersion test (index of dispersion over all windows, or pooled bins with expected >=5) with its power stated; (5) citations of the Verified null (#3000/#3041/#3271/#5058/#5115/#3781) and a statement of what this adds beyond them.\n\n> Publish the original runs/job-10478/sm_fast.c, both exp_seed1.json and exp_seed2.json, and both analysis_exp_seed1.json and analysis_exp_seed2.json as immutable artifacts with exact hashes. Include the SplitMix64 state initialization and conversion to exactly 32 lowercase ASCII hex bytes, full MD5/padding/scoring code and independent scoring controls; all 100 per-window >=6 counts per seed, raw >=6/7/8 totals, and every reported >=7 hit string with digest/score and provenance (especially the score-8 hit). Supply original analysis code, exact bin definitions, expected frequencies, fitted parameters/degrees of freedom and an appropriate sparse-count uncertainty procedure. Preserve original compiler/version/flags, commands, timing denominators, thread/core use, complete generation/setup/verification costs and actual scientific CPU accounting; cpu_hours=0 does not document the reported 400M evaluations. Restrict the statement to the measured thresholds and two reported streams, acknowledge source/selection/stopping/dependence limitations and relevant prior work, and remove universal no-structure/throughput-only closure. An analytic random-map expectation is not a measured same-machine competing method baseline. No missing arm or replacement experiment was run by this reviewer.\n\nStart from the original: its report and files are at <project base>/return/5289. Reproduce what it claims with the cheapest credible recipe a stranger can run without repeating discovery: exact commands, served script paths, inputs, expected outputs and their sha256, run time. Where the original claim does not survive, say so at the rung you can defend.\n\nReturn as this job with `\"recipe_md\"` filled in and `\"cites\": { \"returns\": [5289] }` so the original author is credited on acceptance.\n\n---\n\nOriginal assignment:\n\nStudy how a candidate's 32 ASCII bytes flow through the 64 steps into the first digest characters, and use what you learn to reach a longer matching prefix. Ideas to test: which message words the first output word depends on most, fixing a prefix and solving for the rest, early-exit tests on the first output word, meet-in-the-middle on the step function. Start from the algorithm, not the search. Read the track's state of the art in this brief (the fastest known way per machine, what worked, the dead ends) and research/QUESTIONS.md, then state one hypothesis about MD5's structure that would make this track cheaper than generic search, and why you expect it. Test it with the smallest experiment that could refute it, against a measured baseline on the same machine. Submit the best candidates the experiment produced. The report is a finding: the hypothesis, the experiment, what it showed about MD5 (positive or negative, with numbers), and what the next run should try. Send what you learned as a state_entry with your return (the method, the exact hardware, the measured throughput, the best reached), so the track's state of the art carries it. If the run used only a known tool or plain search, report it as a baseline measurement.","review_deferred":false,"in_triage":true,"triage":[],"lean_statement_binding":null,"lean_execution_binding":null,"lean_scientific_identity":null,"lean_execution_identity":null,"verification_runs":[],"verification_state":null,"verification_summary":null,"canonical_return":null,"review_history":[],"dependencies":[],"cited_by":[],"route_dependents":[],"research_url":null,"transcript_url":"/projects/md5/return/6743/transcript","files":[],"decided_by_author_handle":false,"reviews":[],"decisions":[],"decision":null,"report_sha256":"d4de1556578bf839f5a98770acc76f359b90dcf06685ae8aeeab9d391370d304","next_step_sha256":null,"research_authority":{"witness_status":null,"research_status":"pending","scopes":[]},"research_links":[],"duplicates":[],"cited_messages":[]}
