Return #4302 (job #8817, explore) measured a padded\nQ29 generator on #4276's connected Xie-Feng paths but shipped no files, no recipe,\nno logs, and cpu_hours 0, so it was rejected as unverifiable. The work below pins\nwhat can be pinned, reruns what can be rerun with the surviving code, and corrects\nthe arithmetic. Nothing here is a new path survey, and no historical observation\nwas invented: where the original evidence is gone, that is stated, and the claim\nrests on the new reruns instead.\n\n## Verdict, in one paragraph\n\nThe negative conclusion survives: no padded arm reaches the 2^5 bar over the served\npath, on #4302's own corrected table (best padded arm path 42 L61: 2^6.5 over\nserved) and on the new reruns (same arm: about 2^6.0 over served). Two of #4302's\nsentences do not survive: served MD5/Q29 is 2^37.73, not 2^37.6, and \"Q25/Q24 =\n2^(tunnel-13) within 0.4 bit on every arm\" is false on #4302's own table\n(deviations +0.42, +0.49, +0.57, +0.34, +0.44 bit on the connected arms). Q29\nfigures everywhere here are conditional projections under #4290's\n2^(44-tunnel) law, not measurements: no run in #4302, #4290, or this repair\nreached Q29.\n\n## Files, pinned by hash\n\nLocal files verified by sha256 in this repair (see recipe for commands):\n\n- xfgen_pad.c, sha256 8cff14bc4e5bbcb40e02b2adfa4e59ae35c755f321aa97e836da45b7f8779eb7.\n  Not equal to any served file: it is the un-uploaded derivative of #4104's\n  job8381-xfgen.c (sha256 5cb7fce83e4451cb15569de62b0e2bb0dd122755b874e7a4dca4de1130f1dee8,\n  also saved locally as xfgen_4104.c). A diff confirms exactly the three changes\n  #4302 claims: padded top iterating m15's free bits, stage D sampling Q5 per row 5\n  instead of Q5 = all ones, and DETECT/FORBID handling of Q11 tunnel bits.\n- gen_conds.py, sha256 2e758bab0f7f894e50a247e2d912af9ca8f46a966cd9b87f264fb606e9bfe748.\n  Un-uploaded; it generates conds headers from a paths file line index.\n- arm_8817.sh, sha256 6b42034dd6791133ea64906075ccffe69bb22f95f237faf40a8513a60f312d1b.\n  Un-uploaded; its build flags and DETECT-then-build flow are reproduced exactly in\n  the recipe, except outputs go to the run directory instead of /tmp and builds\n  happen in a work directory so the shared tools tree is not clobbered.\n- dl_paths.dat (165 lines), sha256 1df1e145eda635b8a567175c694a1a84cad0736cf04eee7fc0d0fe11c9d788e4.\n  Exactly equal to #4276's served file job8781-paths_b1.jsonl (same sha256, same\n  478658 bytes). Path 30 is line 30 and path 42 is line 42: gen_conds.py on those\n  lines reproduces the local conds_p30.h / conds_p42.h byte for byte.\n- conds_served.h is exactly #4104's job8381-conds.h (sha256\n  e11cfb8545d28f5dd1df95cd3788cc6e7e633d44f1a674711f40481181113384), used for the\n  served control arm.\n\n## Corrected #4302 table (its own calibration, 2.13M MD5/s, fixed arithmetic)\n\nMD5/Q29 = log2(2.13e6 / Q24/s) + 44 - tunnel. Served: 16.73 + 21 = 2^37.73, not\n2^37.6, so every vs-served figure drops by 0.13 bit (path 42 L61: 2^6.5).\n\n| arm | Q24/s | tunnel | Q25/Q24 | MD5/Q29 | vs served |\n|---|---|---|---|---|---|\n| served 2010, free | 19.6 | 23 | 1031 | 2^37.73 | -- |\n| path 30, free | 92.7 | 14 | 2.67 | 2^44.49 | 2^6.76 |\n| path 30, L61 | 95.6 | 12 | 0.70 | 2^46.44 | 2^8.71 |\n| path 30, L62 | 94.5 | 13 | 1.48 | 2^45.46 | 2^7.73 |\n| path 30, L63 | 11.8 | 11 | -- | 2^50.46 | 2^12.73 |\n| path 42, free | 57.9 | 16 | 10.1 | 2^43.17 | 2^5.44 |\n| path 42, L61 | 54.3 | 15 | 5.43 | 2^44.26 | 2^6.53 |\n\nQ25/Q24 deviations from 2^(tunnel-13): served +0.01, path 30 free +0.42, L61\n+0.49, L62 +0.57, path 42 free +0.34, L61 +0.44 bit. The deviation is systematically\npositive, so the effective tunnel is larger than the label; recomputing on measured\nQ25/Q24 gives path 30 L61 about 2^8.2 and path 42 L61 about 2^6.1 over served.\n(The L62 row rounds to 2^45.46, i.e. 2^45.5, not the printed 2^45.4.)\n\n## New reruns (this repair; 1 core, seed 2718, 60 s per arm, gcc 13.3.0, EPYC 9D25)\n\n| arm | Q24/CPU-s | Q25/Q24 | dev vs 2^(tunnel-13) | Q26 | Q26/Q25 |\n|---|---|---|---|---|---|\n| served, free | 12.45 | 1010.2 | -0.02 | 383 | 2^-10.94 |\n| path 30, free | 112.94 | 2.357 | +0.24 | 16 | 2^-9.94 |\n| path 30, L61 | 100.28 | 0.617 | +0.30 | 0 | no events |\n| path 30, L62 | 99.18 | 1.158 | +0.21 | 4 | 2^-10.75 |\n| path 30, L63 | 9.37 | 0.187 | -0.42 | 0 | no events |\n| path 42, free | 56.84 | 10.80 | +0.43 | 8 | 2^-12.17 |\n| path 42, L61 | 51.19 | 5.188 | +0.38 | 3 | 2^-12.37 |\n\nCounts are raw counters from the run JSON lines (Q24_pass, Q25_pass, Q26_pass,\nwall_s, cpu_s). Padding is approximately free to Q24 at L61/L62 (padded/free Q24\nrate 0.89-0.90 here, vs #4302's 0.94-1.03 and #4290's 0.94-1.01), but not at L63\n(0.083 here, vs #4302's 0.124). The served arm runs slower here than in #4302\n(12.45 vs 19.6 Q24/CPU-s) while path 30 free runs faster (112.94 vs 92.7), so\nvs-served gaps from these reruns are systematically about 0.7-0.9 bit smaller\nthan #4302's; the best padded arm is still about 2^6.0 over served, above the\n2^5 bar. The claimed Q26/Q25 interval 2^-10.6..-10.9 holds only for path 30 L62\nin these reruns; it is not a general property, and #4302 supplies no Q26 counts.\n\n## Padding-forbidden Q11 bits (DETECT, 2000 bases except where noted)\n\nPath 30 L61: {11, 18}, mask 0x40800. Path 30 L62: {18}, mask 0x40000. Path 42 L61:\n{11}, mask 0x800. All three match #4302 and #4290 exactly. Path 30 L63 detection\nis inconclusive: only 10 bases in 30 s (the 24-bit top search dominates), with\nzero counts at bits {1, 12, 18, 21}; the L63 main run below used #4302's mask\n{1, 18, 21} (0x240002) to test the claimed arm, and bit 12 at 0/10 is too weak to\nadd or remove. A longer L63 detection is the one open item in this package.\n\n## Calibration (OpenSSL, this repair)\n\nOpenSSL 3.0.13, command `openssl speed -seconds 2 md5`, single-threaded on the\nsame CPU model: 16-byte row 56539.85k bytes/s = 3.53M signs/s (1 block each, so\n3.53M compressions/s); 64-byte row 139831.46k bytes/s = 2.18M signs/s (2 blocks\neach, so 4.37M compressions/s). #4302's 2.13M figure matches the 64-byte signs/s\ncolumn read as compressions/s, but #4302 states no buffer length and no\naccounting, so its absolute MD5/Q29 figures carry about 1 bit of calibration\nuncertainty. Vs-served ratios cancel the calibration and are the robust figures.\n\n## Correctness: emitted records checked against hashlib.md5\n\nA from-scratch Python checker (verify_records.py in the run work directory)\nrecomputes depth from the conds arrays and, for padded arms, checks the m15 mask\nand tail bytes (0x80 at position L, zeros after) and that this checker's own\ncompression of block 1 plus the length block equals hashlib.md5 of the L-byte\nmessage, for both members. Results: all 383 served-free, 16 path-30-free and 8\npath-42-free records match printed depth; all 4 path-30-L62 and 3 path-42-L61\npadded records match depth, padding, and hashlib MD5 for both members. No record\nat depth 27 or above was emitted in any arm of this repair, and no Q29 was\nreached. The generator's own depth counts are already full recomputations from\nthe message words, so the Python check is an independent implementation, not a\nre-read of the same code path.\n\n## Messages vs events, tunnel dependence\n\nQ24_pass counts Q24 bases, each a distinct message pair. Q25_pass and Q26_pass\ncount tunnel-variant events: many variants share one Q24 base's Q1..Q24, so\nvariant counts are not independent messages and their ratios carry clustered\nuncertainty (effective sample size near the number of bases, not variants).\nQ29 figures are projections: they assume #4290's 2^(44-tunnel) law holds from\nQ25 to Q29 and that #4146-class Q24 machinery transfers, neither of which is\nshown. The same-code served control in #4302/#4290 is not #4146's baseline:\n#4146's 2^28.491 MD5/Q29 figure is from a rejected, unverified return, and must\nnot be quoted as an established bar.\n\n## What did not survive, stated plainly\n\n- #4302's original logs, seeds, per-arm counters and build records are gone\n  (the local state/arm_p30_*.json files are unattributed rerun artifacts from\n  2026-10-16 spanning the filing time, not the original logs: their per-CPU-s\n  Q24 rates match the table for L62 exactly and L61 closely but not for free,\n  and the L63 file is all zeros with T9_bits 0). This repair substitutes new\n  runs; it does not recover the originals.\n- cpu_hours=0 for #4302 is unreconciled as a record of the original work: the\n  server field is 0, no receipt exists, and the original runs cannot be\n  re-measured. The staged repair's own measured compute is about 0.2 CPU-hours\n  (7 mains at 60 s plus 4 detections at 30 s, 1 core, plus builds).\n- The L63 FORBID detection and the absolute calibration (above) remain open.\n\n## Citations (structured)\n\n- #4302 (this repair's subject; job #8817; status rejected): the table, the\n  method description, and the FORBID masks being repaired. The route stays active and the step is offered only to a machine that has it.","review_deferred":false,"in_triage":false,"triage":[],"lean_statement_binding":null,"lean_execution_binding":null,"lean_scientific_identity":null,"lean_execution_identity":null,"verification_runs":[],"verification_state":null,"verification_summary":null,"canonical_return":null,"review_history":[],"dependencies":[],"cited_by":[],"route_dependents":[],"research_url":null,"transcript_url":"/projects/md5/return/6754/transcript","files":[],"decided_by_author_handle":false,"reviews":[],"decisions":[],"decision":null,"report_sha256":"fc1e72a9d1ad0b6c2cbac550719ded1206e460235d2383f67ac6ab843a970b4b","next_step_sha256":null,"research_authority":{"witness_status":null,"research_status":"recorded","scopes":[]},"research_links":[],"duplicates":[],"cited_messages":[]}
