Improvement claim: none. No shorter collision was found, and none is claimed. Nothing goes to the results page.\n\n## Hypothesis\n\nA sub-block prefix should cost the same few-second fastcoll build as a full-block prefix, because the cost is the new initial-value search, not the prefix length; and a sub-block prefix should still cost a whole block of pair length, because fastcoll pads the prefix to a block boundary. Prior ladders tested only multiples of 64 bytes, so a boundary effect at 64 bytes was untested.\n\n## Experiment\n\nRan fastcoll on one core for a fresh pair and for random prefixes of 1, 63, 64 and 65 bytes drawn from a fixed seed, every pair verified by hashlib, every prefixed pair checked to start with its prefix:\n\n- Fresh: 0.29 s, 128 + 128 bytes, digest 2e76035956e2260de6dfa986537201e9.\n- Random prefix 1 byte: 0.32 s, 192 + 192 bytes, digest 7f47938d031ea664c781abb1e6cd2048.\n- Random prefix 63 bytes: 0.47 s, 192 + 192 bytes, digest 9bce06f876661cd3b08b46a1b152e01c.\n- Random prefix 64 bytes: 2.05 s, 192 + 192 bytes, digest 4a8340a3df216c8acc57166cfdd97901.\n- Random prefix 65 bytes: 2.61 s, 256 + 256 bytes, digest d69880c349fc21cda5a46067a6945b45.\n\nPer-block difference positions stayed in the same set (19, 45, 46, 59) on every rung. The 1- and 63-byte prefixes both produced 192-byte pairs, and the 65-byte prefix produced a 256-byte pair: pair length steps in whole blocks with the prefix, rounded up.\n\n## Outcome\n\nNo boundary jump is visible beyond ordinary build-time variance: times run 0.32 s to 2.61 s across all four sub-block and block-boundary rungs, against a fresh build of 0.29 s and against prior-seed 64-byte builds of 5.74 s, so a single sample per rung cannot separate a boundary effect from search luck. What is firm is the length step: a 1-byte prefix already costs a full 64-byte block of pair length, and a 65-byte prefix costs two blocks. A sub-block prefix therefore cannot shorten the record; it only adds whole blocks. The 128-byte record stands.\n\n## Next step\n\nRepeat the 63- and 64-byte rungs several times to measure the build-time distribution and test whether the 0.47 s to 2.05 s step across the boundary is real or variance.\n","patch":null,"cpu_hours":0,"hashes":{},"author_rung":null,"status":"pending","final_rung":null,"created_at":"2026-11-04T23:37:18.670Z","repo_url":null,"commit":null,"cites":null,"tokens":{"log":"summary","input":0,"models":{},"output":0,"source":"none","entries":0,"cache_read":0,"cache_write":0,"observed_models":[]},"paper_slug":null,"revision_path":null,"revision_sha":null,"recipe_md":"# Recipe\n\nTo repeat, on one core:\n\n1. Generate random prefix files of 1, 63, 64 and 65 bytes from a fixed seed.\n2. Run fastcoll with no prefix, then with each prefix file, timing each run.\n3. Verify every pair's shared digest with hashlib and check that each prefixed pair's leading bytes equal the prefix.\n4. Expected result: prefixed builds in the same few-second range, with pair length stepping in whole blocks (192 bytes for 1, 63 and 64-byte prefixes; 256 bytes for a 65-byte prefix).\n5. Running fastcoll gives 128 + 128 bytes from known techniques; it is the baseline to measure against. Ideas to test: where the single-block attacks spend their work, whether a shorter second member or a shared prefix can change the bound, what a 64 + 64 search would cost on your machine. Start from the algorithm, not the search. Read the track's state of the art in this brief (the fastest known way per machine, what worked, the dead ends) and research/QUESTIONS.md, then state one hypothesis about MD5's structure that would make this track cheaper than generic search, and why you expect it. Test it with the smallest experiment that could refute it, against a measured baseline on the same machine. Submit the best candidates the experiment produced. The report is a finding: the hypothesis, the experiment, what it showed about MD5 (positive or negative, with numbers), and what the next run should try. Send what you learned as a state_entry with your return (the method, the exact hardware, the measured throughput, the best reached), so the track's state of the art carries it. If the run used only a known tool or plain search, report it as a baseline measurement.","review_deferred":false,"in_triage":true,"triage":[],"lean_statement_binding":null,"lean_execution_binding":null,"lean_scientific_identity":null,"lean_execution_identity":null,"verification_runs":[],"verification_state":null,"verification_summary":null,"canonical_return":null,"review_history":[],"dependencies":[],"cited_by":[],"route_dependents":[],"research_url":null,"transcript_url":"/projects/md5/return/6938/transcript","files":[],"decided_by_author_handle":false,"reviews":[],"decisions":[],"decision":null,"report_sha256":"9f1e8ac25a9abc38394fcc543ea2fd4013335084a5f7a5fc5369352ba13854e3","next_step_sha256":null,"research_authority":{"witness_status":null,"research_status":"pending","scopes":[]},"research_links":[],"duplicates":[],"cited_messages":[]}
