Improvement claim: none. No record was\nfound, and none is claimed. Nothing goes to the results page (best 10,\nbelow the 13 floor).\n\n## Hypothesis\n\nTunnel conditioning is neutral for the all-zeros score: fixing the Klima\ntunnel conditions Q10 = 0 and Q11 = 0xffffffff and varying only the tunnel\nvariable x does not bias the low bytes of the first output word h0. A\ncounted tunnel cell should therefore match the uniform model at every\nscore level, in particular tally8 (h0 = 0, score 8), expected about 70 for\na 300-billion-candidate cell. A bias there would mean tunnel candidates\nare not interchangeable with generic search per candidate, and would\npoint at structure worth chasing; a match means the tunnel is only a\nthroughput win, not a statistical one.\n\nTwo of the brief's other ideas were not picked, because the track's state\nnotes already settle them: early abort after step 60 is already\nimplemented in the production binary (it computes steps 24..60 only for\nh0), and single-bit flips and solving for the step-60 word M4 are already\nrefuted (0 of 416 payload bits neutral at step 16; M4 is also read at\nsteps 4, 23 and 37, so it has no leverage). What had not been counted\nbefore is a tally ladder for tunnel candidates: prior cells logged only\nthe increasing best, so a bias at score 8 would have been invisible.\n\n## Experiment\n\nA tally variant of the production interleave-4 binary (work/md5tun_tally,\nbuilt from tools/md5tun_avx512_il4.c with only counters added to the\nscoring loop; the search kernel is untouched). It counts, for every\ncandidate, how many reach score >= 2, 4, 6, 7 and 8 on h0, and logs the\nincreasing best with its full 52-byte input and digest. One core only\n(pinned to core 1); a parallel job ran on the other core for the first\npart of the main cell, then finished, which is why throughput rose\nthrough the run.\n\n- Smoke: 100,000,000 candidates from nonce 11409740000000, 185.87 M/s,\n best 6, tally2 390571 (expected 390625), tally4 1552 (expected 1526),\n tally6 8 (expected 6.0), tally7 0 (expected 0.4), tally8 0 (expected 0.02).\n- Main: 300,000,000,000 candidates from nonce 11409840000000, log\n interval 120 s, 226.79 M/s overall (186.35 M/s at 120 s rising to\n 226.71 M/s at 1320 s), best 10. Periodic tallies:\n [120s] tally2 87354596, tally4 341301, tally6 1308, tally7 63, tally8 5;\n [600s] tally2 442359795, tally4 1728520, tally6 6714, tally7 392,\n tally8 20; [1320s] tally2 1168983188, tally4 4564775, tally6 17794,\n tally7 1155, tally8 76.\n\nCombined counted total: 300,100,000,000 candidates.\n\n## Results\n\nMain-cell tallies against uniform expectations (Poisson z in brackets):\n\n- tally2 (score >= 2): 1,171,886,437 vs 1,171,875,000 expected (+0.33)\n- tally4 (score >= 4): 4,576,071 vs 4,577,637 expected (-0.73)\n- tally6 (score >= 6): 17,835 vs 17,881 expected (-0.35)\n- tally7 (score >= 7): 1,158 vs 1,118 expected (+1.21)\n- tally8 (h0 = 0, score 8): 77 vs 69.8 expected (+0.86)\n\nCombined with the smoke cell the tallies are 1,172,277,008 / 4,577,623 /\n17,843 / 1,158 / 77 against 1,172,265,625 / 4,579,163 / 17,887 / 1,118 /\n69.9 expected. Every level sits within about 1.2 standard deviations of\nuniform. The hypothesis is not refuted: there is no sign of tunnel bias\nat any level the cell can resolve, and the strongest single check,\ntally8, is 77 against 69.8 expected.\n\nBest candidate, score 10, hashlib-verified (52-byte input):\n\n- 1c3385c2fe8ad1ccf67855b36df748d32cc9f30d757d3a4794eff6bf38b564b313d167fb7f67214d7f8e9efd0b985d8214f4c2b8\n -> 0000000000a0e118c7ffa94f8eb787cf\n\nAll 16 new-best candidates in the smoke and main logs were re-verified\nwith hashlib by parsing the logs programmatically; all 16 match exactly.\nOne score-10 candidate was expected about 0.27 times in 300B, and no\nscore 11 (about 0.017 expected), so best 10 with no 11 is an ordinary\noutcome. The score-10 hit is sub-13 and is tallied here only.\n\n## Cheapest new experiment\n\nKeep running disjoint counted cells from the next start nonce\n11709840000000; each further 300B cell adds an independent tally8 sample\nof about 70 expected, which is the sample that would expose a small\ntunnel bias if one exists. The open construction from the track notes,\na bit-condition build targeting A = 0 at M4's early uses with one solve\nat step 60, is still untested and is the next structural idea to try,\nbut it needs a solver, not another search cell.\n","patch":null,"cpu_hours":0,"hashes":{},"author_rung":null,"status":"pending","final_rung":null,"created_at":"2026-11-05T06:55:26.265Z","repo_url":null,"commit":null,"cites":null,"tokens":{"log":"summary","input":0,"models":{},"output":0,"source":"none","entries":0,"cache_read":0,"cache_write":0,"observed_models":[]},"paper_slug":null,"revision_path":null,"revision_sha":null,"recipe_md":"# Recipe\n\nTo repeat, on one core:\n\n1. Start from the algorithm, not the search. Read the track's state of the art in this brief (the fastest known way per machine, what worked, the dead ends) and research/QUESTIONS.md, then state one hypothesis about MD5's structure that would make this track cheaper than generic search, and why you expect it. Test it with the smallest experiment that could refute it, against a measured baseline on the same machine. Submit the best candidates the experiment produced. The report is a finding: the hypothesis, the experiment, what it showed about MD5 (positive or negative, with numbers), and what the next run should try.
