Session recovered from the live server\nafter an IncompleteRead pull crash; no re-pull, no start_response.json on\ndisk. It expires 2026-11-06T10:31:43Z.\n\n## Hypothesis\n\nThe kissat knee sits between R=26 and R=28: #13795 found R=26 SAT\n(10.77 s) and R=28/R=30 TIMEOUT at 150 s caps, same encoder\n(tools/md5_cnf.py), same kissat, L=55. R=27 was never run. If R=27 is\nSAT in tens of seconds, the knee is pinned to the single step between\nR=27 and R=28; if it times out, the knee is between R=26 and R=27.\nA second cell at L=52 tests whether fewer free words shift the knee\n(L=52 is where the 13-free-word plateau starts).\n\n## Results\n\nAll cells: same encoder, same kissat, 1 core, 150 s caps, run by\nruns/job-13823/exp_r27.py.\n\n- Control, L=55 R=26: SAT in 8.89 s (encode 0.11 s, CNF 2,676,477\n bytes). Reproduces #13795 (SAT, 10.77 s); the pipeline is unchanged.\n- L=55 R=27: SAT in 70.59 s (encode 0.23 s, CNF 2,778,183 bytes).\n Extracted pair verified with md5_ref: two distinct 55-byte messages\n with equal 27-round digest 1fae3eff1de57f52b102809587fbdb84;\n 64-round digests differ, as expected.\n- L=52 R=27: TIMEOUT/UNKNOWN at 150.01 s (encode 0.11 s, CNF\n 2,774,824 bytes).\n\n## Conclusion\n\nHypothesis supported and refined. At L=55 the knee sits between R=27\nand R=28: wall time grows 8.9 s -> 70.6 s -> timeout across one-round\nsteps, roughly 8x per added round in that range. At L=52 the knee is\nalready at or below R=27 (timeout where L=55 is SAT in 70 s), so fewer\nfree words shift the knee down by at least a round: the easy regime\nnarrows as the message shortens, which matches #13796 E4 (R=24: L=20\ntimeout, L=40 SAT 6.48 s, L=55 SAT 3.02 s). For the L=62 work this\nmeans the CNF filter's cheap regime ends around R=27 at full length,\nand any filter cell above R=27 at L=55 should be budgeted at well over\n150 s per attempt or run at reduced rounds.\n\n## Candidate\n\nThe R=27 pair is a reduced-round (27/64) collision only, not a full\ncollision. No candidate; nothing scores 13 or above; nothing to the\nresults page.\n","patch":null,"cpu_hours":0,"hashes":{},"author_rung":null,"status":"pending","final_rung":null,"created_at":"2026-11-06T08:45:43.116Z","repo_url":null,"commit":null,"cites":null,"tokens":{"log":"summary","input":0,"models":{},"output":0,"source":"none","entries":0,"cache_read":0,"cache_write":0,"observed_models":[]},"paper_slug":null,"revision_path":null,"revision_sha":null,"recipe_md":"# Recipe\n\nTo repeat, on one core:\n\n1. Run `python3 runs/job-13823/exp_r27.py` from the workspace root. It\n writes results.json and cnf_{L}_{L}_r{R}.cnf in runs/job-13823/ and\n prints one line per cell. Expect: (55, 26) SAT in ~9 s, (55, 27)\n SAT in ~70 s, (52, 27) TIMEOUT at 150 s.\n2. To extract a SAT pair, re-run kissat without -q on the saved CNF\n (`kissat --time=150 runs/job-13823/cnf_55_55_r27.cnf >\n r27_model.txt`), then `python3 runs/job-13823/extract_r27.py`. Running fastcoll gives 128 + 128 bytes from known techniques; it is the baseline to measure against. Ideas to test: where the single-block attacks spend their work, whether a shorter second member or a shared prefix can change the bound, what a 64 + 64 search would cost on your machine. Start from the algorithm, not the search. Read the track's state of the art in this brief (the fastest known way per machine, what worked, the dead ends) and research/QUESTIONS.md, then state one hypothesis about MD5's structure that would make this track cheaper than generic search, and why you expect it. Test it with the smallest experiment that could refute it, against a measured baseline on the same machine. Submit the best candidates the experiment produced. The report is a finding: the hypothesis, the experiment, what it showed about MD5 (positive or negative, with numbers), and what the next run should try. Send what you learned as a state_entry with your return (the method, the exact hardware, the measured throughput, the best reached), so the track's state of the art carries it.
