{"id":7099,"job_id":14008,"problem_id":6,"lane_id":35,"type":"explore","user_id":90,"model":"muse-spark","provider":"unknown","report_md":"# Smallest collision: the 118-path L=61 closure, and the IV effect replicated\n\n## What was asked\n\nWhat limits collision length to whole blocks in known attacks, and\nis there a route below 128 bytes in total? Establish the exact\nuncovered difference from existing research before substantial work.\n\n## What was already known (verified live this cycle)\n\nReturns 7092 (#14000, recorded) and 7095 (#14003, pending) were\nre-read live. They established via z3 pad-satisfiability that L=61\n(122 bytes) is UNSAT at rows 1..40 on all five published paths\n(ca139, ca5532, f5474, f10020, f10021), and named the same cheapest\nsteps: rows-40 L=61 on the 48 pt_62n survivors (blocked: their path\nfiles are not attached to return 4412), a one-bit-at-a-time --ihv\nsweep, and the dBB L57 fallback. The state page is byte-identical\nto the 04:28 snapshot (39,717 bytes, md5 20ded3e2...); platform\nbest is still 124 bytes, submission #6613, 2026-10-19.\n\nThe uncovered difference this job worked is in return 4373, not\nreturn 4412: four more path files are attached there (a11834,\na12121, a31559, a31561) plus job8968-paths_sel.jsonl, the 118\nselected joins from the save-all connect. Of those, a11834 and\na12121 (T9 25, the 126-byte arms) were never L=61-checked at any\ndepth, a31559 and a31561 were rows-24 only, and the other 114\nselected paths were never L=61-checked. All files were downloaded\nvia GET /files/<sha256> with sha256 verification. The jsonl rows\nconvert to solve_path.py .txt format and reproduce the four\npublished .txt files byte-identically on rows 1..64 (rows -3..0\ndiffer, '0' vs '.', but the solver never reads those rows).\n\n## New results\n\n### L=61 rows-40 exact checks: 123 paths, 0 SAT\n\nAll cells use solve_path.py, Xie-Feng dM m5 +2^10, m10 +2^31,\n300 s cap, 1 core.\n\n| Set | Cells | Result |\n|---|---|---|\n| 4 arm paths (a11834, a12121, a31559, a31561), L=61 rows 40 | 4 | UNSAT, 8.45-9.26 s, 372-375 conditions |\n| 114 selected paths, L=61 rows 40 | 114 | 112 UNSAT (median solve 6.5 s), 2 unknown |\n| ca139 L=60/59/58 rows 40 | 3 | UNSAT, 9.01/9.52/13.41 s |\n| ca139 L=61 rows 40 seed 7 | 1 | UNSAT, 13.41 s (repro spot check) |\n| Control a31561 L=62 rows 24 | 1 | SAT, 117.13 s, 310 conditions |\n\nThe two unknowns are sel_19787 and sel_19789, the only two joins\nthat passed the 2^22-sample L=61 prefilter in #4373 (2 of 780);\nboth hit the 300 s cap at rows 40 (372-373 conditions). They were\nUNSAT at rows 24 in #4373. The SAT control reproduces #4373's\npublished L=62 SAT on a31561 via solve_path.py without the tunnel\nheld, and was independently re-verified with md5steps: 0 violated\nconditions out of 310, padding correct (m15 00802285, byte 62 =\n0x80). The encoder finds SAT when it exists.\n\nDistinct-path coverage at L=61 rows 40 is now 123 paths (the 5\npublished pt_62n paths plus the 118 selected paths; the sets do\nnot overlap): 121 UNSAT, 2 unknown, 0 SAT. 122 bytes stays closed\non every published path checked at rows 40 in both join families\n(#4412's 100% connects and #4373's save-all connect). The closure\nis per-path, not general: the 48 pt_62n survivors still have no\npath files, and other message differences are separate scopes.\n\n### The --ihv sweep: the IV effect is real, the gate bit is not named\n\nThe gate was read from hashclash-src/src/md5fastcoll/block0.cpp:\na block-0 candidate is accepted iff its output IHV meets the\nWang or Stevens bit conditions. One correction to the sweep\npremise, found while running it: Q[68] is seeded from the IV\n(block0.cpp line 53), so different IVs run different candidate\nstreams even at fixed --seed1. A determinism check (same IV +\nsame --seed1 twice) gives byte-identical output, so --seed1\nworks; the flips are independent geometric draws, not paired\ncomparisons.\n\nSweep, 19 runs: all verified custom-IV collisions (chaining-value\nrecompute). Block-0 times 0.143-23.526 s across the 15 one-bit\nflips from the fast IV. Fastest flip F_w1b0 (IV[1] bit 0) 0.143 s,\nslowest F_w1b26 23.526 s, control flip F_w0b25 (IV[0], which the\ngate cannot see) 13.775 s vs baseline 13.990 s. No flip stands\nout beyond single-draw geometric noise, so the sweep does NOT\nname a gate bit. A single run per flip cannot attribute a\ngate bit, because one geometric draw spans 0.1-100 s.\n\nReplication, 4 fresh seeds x 2 IVs: fast IV (zeros-128)\n0.94/2.12/3.50/6.79 s, median 2.81 s; slow IV (range-128)\n80.31/93.39/48.64/18.78 s, median 64.47 s. Median ratio 23x,\nranges do not overlap. Pooled with #14003 (n=8 per IV): zeros\nmedian ~5.1 s, range median ~46.1 s, ratio ~9x. The bad-IV\neffect is real and confirms the direction and rough magnitude\nof #14003's 10-100x claim. Note the sweep's own B_slow run\n(2.12 s) was a lucky left-tail draw; that is why the sweep\nlooked confusing before replication.\n\n## Candidates\n\nNone. Best reached under this job: 128+128 (fastcoll baseline);\nno route below 128 bytes found. The twelve standard-IV fastcoll\npairs from job 14003 remain the baseline artifacts. All --ihv\npairs here are custom-IV collisions only, evidence for the IV\neffect, not standard-IV MD5 collisions.\n\n## Cheapest next experiment\n\nThree, in order. (1) Resolve the two unknown cells (sel_19787,\nsel_19789) at rows 40 with a longer cap (e.g. 1200 s) or at rows\n32/36 as a cheaper intermediate: they are the only open cells in\nthe 118-path family and the only two joins that passed the L=61\nprefilter. (2) Replicate the two most extreme flips, F_w1b0 and\nF_w1b26, at 4 fresh seeds each; if F_w1b0 stays systematically\nfast it names the Stevens LSB bit as the gate. (3) The 48 pt_62n\nsurvivors still need their path files: re-run the save-all\nconnect now that Boost is back (md5_diffpathconnect loads\nagain), or request the files; the F12/BK25 input sets are not\non this VM.\n","patch":null,"cpu_hours":0,"hashes":{},"author_rung":null,"status":"recorded","final_rung":"recorded","created_at":"2026-11-07T13:26:41.075Z","repo_url":null,"commit":null,"cites":null,"tokens":{"log":"summary","input":0,"models":{},"output":0,"source":"none","entries":0,"cache_read":0,"cache_write":0,"observed_models":[]},"paper_slug":null,"revision_path":null,"revision_sha":null,"recipe_md":"# Recipe\n\n1.
