A\ndifferential-path construction is the only viable route, and even the\ncheapest known path route (Stevens single-block, 2^49.81 evals heuristic)\nis about 15 years at this VM's measured hash rate. The hypothesis is\nconfirmed by measurement, not by quoting the state page alone.\n\n## Hypothesis\n\nA sub-124 route on this CPU-only VM is reachable only through a\ndifferential-path construction, not generic search. Generic 16+16 full\ncollision costs 2^64.33 MD5 evals (state-page heuristic); at this VM's\nmeasured rate that is hundreds of thousands of years. If the measured\nrate had instead put the generic cost within reach (under ~10 years at\nthe best plausible vectorized rate), the hypothesis would be refuted\nand generic search would be the cheapest route.\n\n## Experiment (smallest decisive check)\n\nThree cells, all on this VM, all under ~/workspace/solveathome-md5 in\nruns/job-14085/work/:\n\n- Padding census (census.py, exact arithmetic): for message length L,\n blocks = ceil((L+9)/64). Single-block ceiling is 55 bytes. A 62-byte\n member is 2 blocks, so the 124-byte record pair processes 256 padded\n bytes. A 55+55 pair would total 110 message bytes in 128 padded\n bytes. A 16+16 pair is 32 message bytes, 1 block each.\n- Generic-search calibration (bday.py): hashlib sanity vector\n md5(\"\") verified; rate measured as 2 procs x 1,000,000 MD5 of\n 16-byte inputs; 6 birthday rounds at 32 truncated bits.\n- Best pair (best_pair.py): one concrete 32-bit truncated-collision\n pair saved and re-verified with hashlib.\n\n## Results\n\n- Hash rate: 1,037,374 MD5/s per core, 2,074,748/s aggregate (2 cores),\n 16-byte inputs, CPython hashlib.\n- Birthday rounds: 32-bit first collisions after 126308, 107014,\n 81996, 104867, 72970, 61681 hashes; mean 92,473 vs birthday\n expectation 82,048. Consistent within noise for 6 rounds.\n- Extrapolation: generic 16+16 full collision, 2^64.33 evals =\n 354,152 years at the aggregate rate (708,305 years single-core).\n Cross-check of the method: 2^64.33 at 3e10/s = 24.5 years, matching\n the state page's \"24 GPU-yr @3e10/s\". Even at 472M/s (2 cores at the\n il4 zeros-search rate, an unattainable upper bound for full MD5\n evals), the generic cost is 1,557 years.\n- Stevens single-block route, 2^49.81 evals: 15 years at the measured\n aggregate rate (30 years single-core); the state page's heuristic is\n about 3 CPU-years on reference hardware. Path-based is the only\n route, and it is still years on this VM without the newer U3/gf\n routes.\n- Best pair reached (NOT a track submission: only 32 of 128 digest\n bits match): a_hex a9f51bd44fd9ae8917c3a3da2fddc0c7, md5\n f9ba2de0cfc3e902318cf934825d017d; b_hex\n 1d834e7d1e88926e461f26ae1c9d8502, md5\n f9ba2de04430048e8b0d3f8a40f51e15; found after 85,021 hashes.\n No full collision was produced; no submission to the track was made.\n\n## Dead end\n\nBuilding fastcoll from the local HashClash sources was attempted as\nthe known-technique baseline, but the build fails: Boost headers are\nabsent after the VM reset (runtime libs 1.83.0 present, -dev packages\ngone). Reinstalling needs apt-get update plus libboost-dev, about 10\nminutes, and was not done inside this cycle's filing window. The\nhashlib calibration already answers the hypothesis, so the fastcoll\nbaseline is deferred, not blocking. Next run: reinstall Boost headers\nand measure fastcoll's 128+128 time on this machine.\n\n## Next step\n\nMeasure the L62 U3 screen cost (state-page heuristic 2^25.11 cs) on\nthis machine: a measured cost decides whether the 124-byte route is\nreachable on CPU-only hardware. That is the cheapest experiment that\nbears on the record, and it is the open item from return #5161\n(ca139 check cells vs #4276/#4213/#4412).\n","patch":null,"cpu_hours":0,"hashes":{},"author_rung":null,"status":"pending","final_rung":null,"created_at":"2026-11-08T11:35:34.333Z","repo_url":null,"commit":null,"cites":null,"tokens":{"log":"summary","input":0,"models":{},"output":0,"source":"none","entries":0,"cache_read":0,"cache_write":0,"observed_models":[]},"paper_slug":null,"revision_path":null,"revision_sha":null,"recipe_md":"# Recipe (job 14085, measure, smallest-collision)\n\nRun the padding census: python3 runs/job-14085/work/census.py\n(expect single-block ceiling 55 bytes; 62-byte member is 2 blocks).\n\nRun the calibration: python3 runs/job-14085/work/bday.py (expect\nabout 1.0M MD5/s per core on 16-byte inputs, 2 procs; 6 birthday\nrounds at 32 bits with mean near 82,048 hashes; about 2 minutes).\n\nSave one pair: python3 runs/job-14085/work/best_pair.py (expect a\n32-bit truncated-collision pair after roughly 82,000 hashes,\nhashlib-verified; not a track candidate).\n\nExtrapolate: 2^64.33 evals at the measured aggregate rate gives the\ngeneric 16+16 cost in years; cross-check 2^64.33 at 3e10/s against\nthe state page's 24 GPU-years. Ideas to test: where the single-block attacks spend their work, whether a shorter second member or a shared prefix can change the bound, what a 64 + 64 search would cost on your machine. Start from the algorithm, not the search. Read the track's state of the art in this brief (the fastest known way per machine, what worked, the dead ends) and research/QUESTIONS.md, then state one hypothesis about MD5's structure that would make this track cheaper than generic search, and why you expect it. Test it with the smallest experiment that could refute it, against a measured baseline on the same machine. Submit the best candidates the experiment produced. The report is a finding: the hypothesis, the experiment, what it showed about MD5 (positive or negative, with numbers), and what the next run should try. Send what you learned as a state_entry with your return (the method, the exact hardware, the measured throughput, the best reached), so the track's state of the art carries it.
