For every real `L > 0`, real `E > 0`, integer `d >= 1` and integer `j_0`,\n\n    TV(g_a on [E, 2E])  <=  (1 + 2/L) log 2  +  lambda/4,      lambda := dE/L    (Theorem 1)\n\nand the plain product rule gives the weaker `1 + 2/L + lambda/4`. No condition on `dE` is needed. On the recon block (`M >= 1/2`, `E = L/(DM)`, `d in (D, 2D]`, so `lambda <= 2/M`) this is at most `(1 + 2/L) log 2 + 1/(2M) <= 1.74` once `L >= 30`. The Abel step against `Delta_a(t; d) - Delta_a(E; d)` has factor `sup|G| + Var G <= (3/4) lambda + (1 + 2/L) log 2 <= 3/(2M) + (1 + 2/L) log 2 <= 3.74` (Theorem 2). Review #1102's advisory `4 + 1/M + 4/(M dE)` is a true upper bound on every block, because it exceeds Theorem 1. Its derivation is not right as written. Two of its inputs are four times and twice the sharp constants, which is harmless. One input is wrong: the prefactor range `[1/M, 2/M]` holds only at `d = D`. Over `d in (D, 2D]` the prefactor reaches `4/M`, and the advisory's own constants then give `4 + 4/L + lambda <= 4 + 4/L + 2/M`, not `4 + 1/M + 4/(M dE)`. Its `4/(M dE)` term equals `4D/(dL) < 4/L` on the block, so it never grows. The case `dE -> 0` does not occur: a nonempty block has `M dE = dL/D >= L`. The note's own displayed `4 + 10/M` is 24 at `M = 1/2` and fails its printed `<= 14` there; this agrees with #1102. The weighted maximal block mean-square estimate that (iii) feeds is not touched and stays unproved.\n\n`BLIND.md` (commit `a23dec4`, before this file existed) states the same theorem. It was written before I opened review #1102, so nothing in it uses the advisory's inputs. The probe agrees: `probe.py` finds no exceedance on 7611 blocks with about 3.1 million exact evaluations. The worst ratio of measured variation to the Theorem 1 bound is 0.585.\n\n## 0. Conventions\n\n`L > 0` real (`L = x#` in the note; nothing below uses that). `d ~ D` means `D < d <= 2D` and `e ~ E` means `E < e <= 2E`. With the half-open convention the other way round (`D <= d < 2D`), every bound below holds verbatim: the only place `d ~ D` enters is `1/M < lambda <= 2/M`, which becomes `1/M <= lambda < 2/M`.\n\nFor real `n > 0` and real `c`,\n\n    R_n(c) := sum_{k in Z} (1 - |c + kn|/L)^+ - L/n.\n\nAt `n = de`, `c = 2 + e j_0` this is the bracket of recon section 1. There `h = 2 + ej` with `j = j_0 (mod d)` runs over `c + deZ`, and the terms with `|h| >= L` vanish. `R_n(c)` depends on `c` only modulo `n`.\n\n`Bbar(x) := {x}^2 - {x} + 1/6`, the periodic second Bernoulli function. It is continuous on `R` because `Bbar(0) = Bbar(1-) = 1/6`. It is even and 1-periodic, its values lie in `[-1/12, 1/6]`, and off `Z` its derivative is `2{x} - 1`, in `(-1, 1)`. So `Bbar` is 1-Lipschitz.\n\nThe function the Abel step needs. Recon 3.2 (iii) subtracts `(1/phi(d)) sum_{(e,d)=1} lam1(e) G(a, e)`, so it evaluates `G(a, e)` at every `e` coprime to `d`, not only at `e = a (mod d)`. Recon 3.2 (iv) sums `G(a, e)` over all `a` at fixed `e`. So `G(a, .)` must mean the formula with `j_0 = j_0(a)` held fixed and `e` free:\n\n    g_a(u) := R_{du}(2 + u j_0(a)),   u > 0 real,   G(a, e) := g_a(e).\n\nAt `e = a (mod d)` this is `R_{de}` of the CRT class of `(0 mod d, 2 mod e)`. At other `e` it is `R_{de}` of another class, and the main-term identity (iv) uses exactly those values. Theorem 1 bounds the variation of `g_a` on the real interval. That bounds the variation over the class, over all `e` coprime to `d`, and over any other finite subset.\n\n## 1. The closed form\n\n**Lemma 1.** For `n > 0` and `x >= -n`, let `m = floor(x/n)` and `s = x - mn` in `[0, n)`. Then\n\n    A(x) := sum_{k >= 0} (x - kn)^+ = x^2/(2n) + x/2 + s(n - s)/(2n).\n\n*Proof.* The nonzero terms are `k = 0, ..., m`, none when `m = -1`. So `A(x) = (m + 1)x - n m(m+1)/2 = (m+1)(mn + 2s)/2`, which is 0 at `m = -1`. Expanding `x^2/(2n) + x/2` with `x = mn + s` gives `m^2 n/2 + ms + s^2/(2n) + mn/2 + s/2`. Expanding `A` gives `m^2 n/2 + ms + mn/2 + s`. The difference is `s/2 - s^2/(2n) = s(n - s)/(2n)`. QED\n\n**Proposition 1 (closed form).** For real `L, n > 0` and real `c`, put `rho = L/n` and `theta = c/n`; reduction mod 1 is not needed. Then `R_n(c) = (n/L) F(rho, theta)` with\n\n    F(rho, theta) = Bbar(theta) - ( Bbar(rho - theta) + Bbar(rho + theta) ) / 2.\n\nOn `[0, 1]^2`, `F(rho, theta) = (rho - theta)^+ + (rho + theta - 1)^+ - rho^2`, the note's form.\n\n*Proof.* Both sides are `n`-periodic in `c`. On the left this is because the sum runs over a class mod `n`; on the right `F` is 1-periodic in `theta`. So take `c in [0, n]`. Split the class at 0. The terms `h = c + kn`, `k >= 0`, have `h >= 0` and contribute `(L - c - kn)^+/L`. The terms `h = c - mn`, `m >= 1`, have `h <= 0` and contribute `(L + c - mn)^+/L`. The point `h = 0` is counted once in each case: at `c = 0` it is `k = 0`; at `c = n` it is `m = 1`. So\n\n    L (R_n(c) + L/n) = A(x_1) + A(x_2),   x_1 = L - c,   x_2 = L - n + c,\n\nwith `x_1, x_2 >= -n` because `0 <= c <= n`. Lemma 1 applies. `x_1 = (L - n/2) - (c - n/2)` and `x_2 = (L - n/2) + (c - n/2)`, so `(x_1^2 + x_2^2)/(2n) = ((L - n/2)^2 + (c - n/2)^2)/n` and `(x_1 + x_2)/2 = L - n/2`. Also `(L - n/2)^2/n + L - n/2 = L^2/n - n/4`. The residues are `s_1 = n{rho - theta}` and `s_2 = n{rho + theta - 1} = n{rho + theta}`. With `P(y) := {y}(1 - {y})`,\n\n    L R_n(c) / n  =  (theta - 1/2)^2 - 1/4 + ( P(rho - theta) + P(rho + theta) ) / 2.\n\n`P = 1/6 - Bbar`, and `(theta - 1/2)^2 - 1/4 = Bbar(theta) - 1/6` for `theta in [0, 1]`. This gives the Bernoulli form, and periodicity extends it to every `theta`. For the piecewise form, use `P(y) = y - y^2 + 2(-y)^+` for `y in [-1, 1]` and `P(y) = y - y^2 + 2(y - 1)^+` for `y in [0, 2]`. The two linear parts sum to `2rho - 2rho^2 - 2theta^2`, so `F = theta^2 - theta + rho - rho^2 - theta^2 + (theta - rho)^+ + (rho + theta - 1)^+`. Then `x + (-x)^+ = x^+` with `x = rho - theta` gives the note's form. QED\n\nThe probe checks Proposition 1 against the defining sum at 360 rational `(L, n, c)`, `c` outside `[0, n]` included. It also checks it at every class point of every block, with no mismatch.\n\n## 2. The five inputs\n\n### (a) Lipschitz constants: 1 in `rho`, 1 in `theta`, both sharp\n\nOff the lines where `rho - theta`, `rho + theta` or `theta` is an integer, `F` is a polynomial, and\n\n    d_rho F   = -( (2{rho - theta} - 1) + (2{rho + theta} - 1) )/2 = 1 - {rho - theta} - {rho + theta}   in (-1, 1],\n    d_theta F = (2{theta} - 1) + ( (2{rho - theta} - 1) - (2{rho + theta} - 1) )/2\n              = 2{theta} + {rho - theta} - {rho + theta} - 1.\n\nFor `d_theta F`, `2{theta} + {rho - theta} - {rho + theta}` is congruent mod 1 to `2theta + (rho - theta) - (rho + theta) = 0`. So it is an integer, and it lies in `(-1, 3)`. Hence `d_theta F` is in `{-1, 0, 1}`. `F` is continuous because `Bbar` is. Along any line parallel to an axis, `F` is piecewise polynomial with finitely many breaks in a bounded window. So `|F(rho', theta) - F(rho, theta)| <= |rho' - rho|` and `|F(rho, theta') - F(rho, theta)| <= |theta' - theta|`, for all real arguments with no reduction mod 1. Both constants are sharp: `F(rho, 0) = rho - rho^2` has slope 1 at `rho = 0+`, and `F = rho - theta - rho^2` on `0 < theta < rho < 1 - theta` has `d_theta F = -1`. The note's rho constant 4 and the advisory's theta constant 2 are valid but not sharp. Domain: all of `R^2`.\n\n### (b) The wrap: `F(0, theta) = F(1, theta) = 0` and no jump term\n\n`F(0, theta) = Bbar(theta) - (Bbar(-theta) + Bbar(theta))/2 = 0` because `Bbar` is even, and `F(1, theta) = F(0, theta)` by periodicity. This holds for every real `theta`, which is more than the `[0, 1]` the note needs. The structural point is stronger than the endpoint values: `F` is a continuous function on the torus `(R/Z)^2`. So `u -> F(L/(du), theta(u))` is continuous wherever `L/(du)` crosses an integer (the `rho` wrap) and wherever `theta(u)` crosses an integer. On the block, `theta = (2 + e j_0)/(de)` lies in `(0, 1)` when `e > 2`, but nothing below uses that. Neither wrap adds a jump, and Theorem 1 never reduces `rho` mod 1: it measures the motion of the unreduced `L/(du)`. Domain: all real `theta`.\n\n### (c) The two motions over a block\n\nAs `u` runs over `[E, 2E]`, `L/(du)` decreases from `L/(dE)` to `L/(2dE)`. The motion is exactly `L/(2dE) = 1/(2 lambda)`. On the recon block, `L/(2dE) = DM/(2d) < M/2` because `d > D`. Equality would need `d = D`, which `d ~ D` excludes in this convention. The other part, `2/(du)`, decreases from `2/(dE)` to `1/(dE)`, so it moves by exactly `1/(dE)`. `j_0/d` is constant because `j_0` depends only on `a`. The note's statement \"theta is CONSTANT on the class\" is wrong (#1102 says the same); the motion `1/(dE)` is priced below. Over the class points or the coprime points the motions are at most these. Domain: any `d, E > 0`.\n\n### (d) The prefactor range\n\n`n/L = du/L` runs over `[lambda, 2 lambda]` as `u` runs over `[E, 2E]`, with `lambda = dE/L = d/(DM)`. For `d in (D, 2D]`, `lambda in (1/M, 2/M]`. So over the whole block, `n/L in (1/M, 4/M]`. For one `d`, the prefactor varies by exactly `lambda <= 2/M` and is at most `2 lambda <= 4/M`. Neither printed range covers the block. The note's `[1/(2M), 2/M]` and the advisory's `[1/M, 2/M]` each contain the `d = D` range `(1/M, 2/M]`, but for every `d > D` the top of the range is `2d/(DM) > 2/M`. The advisory's claim that the note's range is wrong is correct, and the advisory's own range is wrong too. Concrete case inside the recon's own support: `L = 13# = 30030`, `M = 1`, `D = 8`, so `E = 15015/4`; `d = 13` and `e = 7493 = 59 * 127` (squarefree, coprime to `30d`, 173-friable with 173 the largest prime `<= sqrt L`) give `n/L = 97409/30030 > 3.24`, above both printed upper ends `2/M = 2`. Domain: the recon block.\n\n### (e) The sup of `|F|`: at most 1/4, sharp\n\n`Bbar` takes values in `[-1/12, 1/6]`, so `F <= 1/6 + 1/12 = 1/4` and `F >= -1/12 - 1/6 = -1/4`. `F(1/2, 0) = 1/4` and `F(1/2, 1/2) = -1/4`. Combined with (a) and (b): `|F(rho, theta)| <= min(||rho||, 1/4)`, where `||rho||` is the distance to `Z`. Hence `|g_a(u)| <= (du/L)/4 <= lambda/2 <= 1/M` on the block. This confirms recon (i), `|G| <= 2/M`, with a factor 2 to spare, despite the wrong range in (d). The probe attains `sup|g| = lambda/2` exactly. The asserted `sup|F| <= 1` is valid but four times too large. Domain: all of `R^2`.\n\n## 3. Theorem 1 (the variation bound)\n\n**Theorem 1.** For real `L, E > 0`, integer `d >= 1`, integer `j_0` and `lambda = dE/L`:\n\n    TV(g_a on [E, 2E])  <=  (1 + 2/L) log 2 + lambda/4                       (integral form)\n                        <=  1 + 2/L + lambda/4                                (product rule).\n\n*Proof.* Substitute `p = du/L`, which is increasing, so the variation is unchanged. Then `p` runs over `[lambda, 2 lambda]`, and\n\n    g(p) = p F( 1/p, j_0/d + 2/(Lp) ).\n\nWhere `F` breaks, `theta = j_0/d + 2/(Lp)`, `rho - theta = (1 - 2/L)/p - j_0/d` and `rho + theta = (1 + 2/L)/p + j_0/d` must take integer values. Each is monotone in `p`, or constant (`rho - theta` at `L = 2`; a constant argument leaves `Bbar` constant along the path). So each crosses only finitely many integers on the compact interval. Between breaks `g` is a smooth function of `p`, and `g` is continuous throughout (by (b)). So `TV(g) = integral |g'(p)| dp`, and off the breaks\n\n    g'(p) = F - ( d_rho F + (2/L) d_theta F ) / p.\n\nBy (a) and (e), `|g'(p)| <= 1/4 + (1 + 2/L)/p`. Integrating over `[lambda, 2 lambda]` gives `lambda/4 + (1 + 2/L) log 2`.\n\nProduct rule. `|p'F' - pF| <= p'|F' - F| + |F||p' - p|` summed over a partition gives `TV(pF) <= sup p * TV(F along the path) + sup|F| * TV(p)`. By (a) and (c), `TV(F along the path) <= 1 * 1/(2 lambda) + 1 * 1/(dE)`. By (d), `sup p = 2 lambda`; by (e), `sup|F| = 1/4`; by (d), `TV(p) = lambda`. So `TV <= 2 lambda (1/(2 lambda) + 1/(dE)) + lambda/4 = 1 + 2/L + lambda/4`, because `2 lambda/(dE) = 2/L`. QED\n\n**The finite constant.** On the recon block `lambda <= 2/M`, so\n\n    Var G  <=  (1 + 2/L) log 2 + 1/(2M)  <=  0.7394 + 1/(2M)  <=  1.74      (M >= 1/2, L >= 30),\n\nusing `log 2 < 0.693148` and `(1 + 1/15)(0.693148) < 0.73936`. The variation here is over the class, over the coprime `e`, or over the real interval. The product-rule form gives `1 + 2/L + 1/(2M) <= 2.07`. For `L < 30`, Theorem 1 still gives a finite value; at `L >= 2`, `Var G <= 2 log 2 + 1/(2M) <= 2.39`.\n\nWhere the cancellation comes from: `theta` moves by `1/(dE)`, but the prefactor on the block is `<= 2dE/L`, so the theta term costs `2/L` whatever `dE` is. The advisory loses this by bounding the prefactor with the `d`-free number `2/M`.\n\n## 4. Comparison with the advisory and with the note\n\n| | `rho` Lipschitz | `theta` Lipschitz | `sup(n/L)` | `TV(n/L)` | sup of abs F | result |\n|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|\n| note (displayed) | 4, over `M/2 + 1` windings | not priced | `2/M` | `2/M` | 1 | `4 + 10/M` (24 at `M = 1/2`) |\n| advisory #1102 | 4 | 2 | `2/M` | `1/M` | 1 | `4 + 1/M + 4/(M dE)` |\n| advisory constants, correct (d) | 4 | 2 | `2 lambda <= 4/M` | `lambda <= 2/M` | 1 | `4 + 4/L + lambda <= 4 + 4/L + 2/M` |\n| this file, product rule | 1 | 1 | `2 lambda` | `lambda` | 1/4 | `1 + 2/L + lambda/4` |\n| this file, Theorem 1 | 1 | 1 | (integrated) | (integrated) | 1/4 | `(1 + 2/L) log 2 + lambda/4` |\n\nWhat this says about the advisory:\n\n1. Its final formula `4 + 1/M + 4/(M dE)` is a true upper bound on every recon block, because `4 + 1/M > 0.74 + 1/(2M) >= ` Theorem 1 for `L >= 30`. The probe's worst ratio of measured variation to `4 + 1/M + 4/(M dE)` is 0.132.\n2. The derivation does not prove that formula for `d > D`. With the advisory's own Lipschitz constants and `sup|F| = 1`, the correct prefactor data (d) give `4 + 4/L + lambda`, which is `8 + 4/L` at `M = 1/2`, `d = 2D`. That is larger than the advisory's `6 + 8/(dE)`. Inputs (b) and (c) are right as the advisory uses them (`M/2` is an upper bound for every `d >= D`). Inputs (a) and (e) are valid but loose. Input (d) is wrong.\n3. The `dE` question. On a nonempty block, `M dE = M d L/(DM) = dL/D > L`, so `4/(M dE) = 4D/(dL) < 4/L` and `8/(dE)` at `M = 1/2` is `< 4/L`. Also `dE >= L/M`, so `dE >= 1` holds whenever `M <= L`. Within the recon's ranges (`M` from `1/2` to `log L`, `n > L^{1 - eta}`), `dE >= L/log L`. The regime `dE -> 0` is outside every block. Off the block, with `E` free, the correct bound (Theorem 1) contains no `dE` at all. The growth of the advisory's `C` as `dE -> 0` is an artifact of bounding the prefactor by `2/M`, not a property of the kernel.\n4. The note's display `(2/M)(4(M/2 + 1)) + 2/M = 4 + 10/M <= 14` holds only for `M >= 1`; at `M = 1/2` it gives 24. This agrees with #1102. The winding count `M/2 + 1` is not needed: by (b) the wrap costs nothing, and the variation of a 1-Lipschitz function along the path is at most the length of the path.\n\n## 5. Theorem 2 (the Abel factor)\n\nFix `d`, `a`, the weight `w` (`lam1` in recon 3.2) and the block `E < e <= 2E`. Put\n\n    Delta_a(t; d) = sum_{e <= t, e = a (d)} w(e) - (1/phi(d)) sum_{e <= t, (e, d) = 1} w(e),     P(t) := Delta_a(t; d) - Delta_a(E; d).\n\n**Theorem 2.**\n\n    | sum_{E < e <= 2E, e = a (d)} w(e) G(a, e) - (1/phi(d)) sum_{E < e <= 2E, (e,d) = 1} w(e) G(a, e) |\n        <=  ( sup_{[E,2E]} |g_a| + TV(g_a on [E, 2E]) ) max_{E <= t <= 2E} |Delta_a(t; d) - Delta_a(E; d)|\n        <=  ( (3/4) lambda + (1 + 2/L) log 2 ) max_{E <= t <= 2E} |Delta_a(t; d) - Delta_a(E; d)|.\n\nOn the recon block the factor is at most `3/(2M) + (1 + 2/L) log 2 <= 3.74` (`M >= 1/2`, `L >= 30`).\n\n*Proof.* Let `e_1 < ... < e_k` be the integers in `(E, 2E]` coprime to `d`. `P` is a right-continuous step function with `P = 0` on `[E, e_1)`. Its jumps lie in `{e_i}`, with `P(e_i) - P(e_i -) = w(e_i)(1[e_i = a (d)] - 1/phi(d))`. So, with `P(e_0) := 0`, the left side is\n\n    | sum_{i=1..k} G(a, e_i) (P(e_i) - P(e_{i-1})) |\n        = | G(a, e_k) P(e_k) - sum_{i=1..k-1} P(e_i) (G(a, e_{i+1}) - G(a, e_i)) |\n       <= ( |G(a, e_k)| + sum_{i} |G(a, e_{i+1}) - G(a, e_i)| ) max_i |P(e_i)|.\n\nThe bracket is at most `sup|g_a| + TV(g_a on [E, 2E])`, because the `e_i` lie in `[E, 2E]` and `G(a, e_i) = g_a(e_i)`. Then `sup|g_a| <= lambda/2` by (e), and Theorem 1 bounds the variation. QED\n\nTwo remarks. First, the variation that enters is over all `e` coprime to `d`, not only over the class `a`, because the subtracted mean evaluates `G(a, .)` off the class. The probe measures both. Second, the printed form `(2 sup|G| + Var G) max_t |Delta_a(t; d)|` is also a true inequality: run the same summation with `Delta_a` in place of `P`, which leaves a boundary term at `E`. But it is stated against the prefix discrepancy from 1. Accepted #1983 shows the printed `(H_w)` for that prefix is false at modulus 7, and says an interval argument must use `Delta(t) - Delta(E)`. Theorem 2 is that form, and it also has the smaller factor `sup + Var` in place of `2 sup + Var`.\n\n**Section 3.2, rewritten with these constants (a proposal, not applied to the source).**\n\n> (ii) For fixed `a`, `G(a, .)` extended by `g_a(u) = R_{du}(2 + u j_0(a))` has total variation `<= (1 + 2/L) log 2 + dE/(4L) <= (1 + 2/L) log 2 + 1/(2M)` on `[E, 2E]`. This follows from the closed form `R_n(c) = (n/L) F(L/n, c/n)` with `F(rho, theta) = Bbar(theta) - (Bbar(rho - theta) + Bbar(rho + theta))/2`, which is 1-Lipschitz in each variable, bounded by 1/4 and continuous on the torus, and from the motions `L/(du)`: `DM/(2d) <= M/2`, `2/(du)`: `1/(dE)`, `du/L in [dE/L, 2dE/L]`.\n> (iii) `| sum_{e ~ E, e = a (d)} lam1(e) G(a,e) - (1/phi(d)) sum_{e ~ E, (e,d)=1} lam1(e) G(a,e) | <= C_1 max_{t in [E, 2E]} |Delta_a(t; d) - Delta_a(E; d)|`, `C_1 = 3/(2M) + (1 + 2/L) log 2 <= 3.74`.\n\nThe step after (iii) needs an estimate for `sum_d lam0(d) sum_a max_t |Delta_a(t; d) - Delta_a(E; d)|`, the weighted maximal block mean-square estimate, over the full range. That estimate is not proved here or anywhere I read. Nothing in this file bears on it or on the twin margin.\n\n## 6. The probe (evidence, not proof)\n\n`nice -n 10 python3 research/kernel-variation/probe.py` runs on one thread with stdlib only, in about 190 s. Every quantity is a `Fraction`, and `log 2` is replaced by the rational upper bound `sum_{k<=60} 1/(k 2^k) + 1/(61 * 2^60)`.\n\n- Part A, on a `145^2` grid in `[0, 1]^2`: the piecewise form equals the Bernoulli form; `|F| <= min(rho, 1 - rho, 1/4)`; `sup|F| = 1/4` is attained; `F(0, .) = F(1, .) = 0`; the torus wraps match. The largest neighbour difference quotient is `143/144` in `rho` and `1` in `theta`, against the proved 1 and 1. The closed form equals the definition at 360 rational `(L, n, c)`.\n- Part B, blocks `L in {2, 6, 30, 210, 2310, 30030, 1001/3}`, `M in {1/2, ..., 64}`, dyadic `D` from 1/2 up to `2E >= 1`. For each, up to 5 values of `d in (D, 2D]` and up to 6 units `a`. `g` comes from the defining sum, checked against the closed form at every class point. Three variations are measured: over the class, over all `e` coprime to `d` (skipped above 4000 points), and over a 241-point rational partition of `[E, 2E]`. Result: 7611 blocks and 3,123,916 exact evaluations. No variation exceeds the Theorem 1 bound, and `sup|g| <= lambda/2` everywhere, with equality attained. The worst point is `L = 30030`, `M = 2`, `D = 16384`, `d = 28672`, `a = 28671`, `j_0 = 2`, `E = 15015/16384`, on the fine partition: variation 0.533589 against the bound 0.911943, ratio 0.585. Largest ratios to the other bounds: 0.438 to the product-rule bound `1 + 2/L + lambda/4`, and 0.132 to the advisory's `4 + 1/M + 4/(M dE)`.\n\nThe probe runs past the recon's range (`D` up to `L/M`, `E < 1`, `L` not primorial). Theorem 1 claims all of that, so the extra range is a fair test. A fine partition gives a lower estimate of the real variation, so a ratio below 1 on a partition is consistent with Theorem 1 but cannot certify it. The proof carries the claim. The worst ratio of 0.585 suggests Theorem 1 is loose by less than a factor 2 on these grids. I do not claim a sharp constant.\n\n## What this rests on\n\n- The definition of `R_n(c)`, `j_0` and the block in recon sections 1 and 3.2 (mirror, `research/history/staging/recon-0830-smooth-aps.md`, sha256 `b64900a74c7649dbc91e4f8efc5e181d705150ffd3db4db115447a8ef0eab38e`, the same base #1983 cites). Nothing else: no external theorem enters Theorems 1 and 2.\n- Review #1102 and its advisory, `research/sah-state/2026-10-22/review-1102.json`, sha256 `cd07eba84929ce5c710576f3082e2de80b397fdeebfa807ea4db3c6239d8e24e`, read after `BLIND.md` was committed.\n- Return #1983 (`research/sah-state/2026-10-22/returns/01983.md`, sha256 `cafe1f05a16ae8583be6225cd5c5eafa4cdc12c0b0845ad220c8e751877c17b9`), only for its statement that `(H_w)` as printed is false and that the interval form uses `Delta(t) - Delta(E)`. Return #1973 (`returns/01973.md`, sha256 `efb4b72a70b12926c1db931d164ca6643dc4f946b041b50eb803df9b05cf5cac`, and `attachments/01973/check4408-output.json`) concerns the Pascadi norm dictionary. It does not enter this kernel; I read it and changed nothing on its account. The #1983, #1973 and #926 controls and the published counts (0.4576, 0.656563, 1.25e-14) were not rerun. The probe's own numbers are a new exact-rational custody run, not a re-count of those.\n- No web source and no PDF was used.\n\n## Filing note\n\n- Route 230: **addresses** its next_step. It gives the five inputs derived with domains, the wrap treatment, a finite `C` (`Var G <= (1 + 2/L) log 2 + 1/(2M) <= 1.74`), the `dE` question settled (not needed; `M dE > L` on every block), and the Abel factor against `Delta_a(t; d) - Delta_a(E; d)` (`C_1 <= 3/(2M) + (1 + 2/L) log 2 <= 3.74`). The weighted maximal block mean-square estimate is left unproved, as the route requires.\n- Review #1102 / finding #92829 on return #3269: **bears_on**. The advisory's number is a true bound, but its derivation is incomplete for `d > D`: the prefactor range is `(1/M, 4/M]` over the block, and with the advisory's own constants that gives `4 + 4/L + 2/M`. Its Lipschitz constants and `sup|F|` are loose by factors 4, 2 and 4. Its `dE` caveat is vacuous on the block.\n- Recon note section 3.2: **bears_on**. (i) holds with room (`|G| <= 1/M`). (ii) needs the corrected text above; its `<= 14` fails at `M = 1/2` as displayed, and the true constant is `<= 1.74`. (iii) restated against `Delta(t) - Delta(E)` with factor `sup + Var`.\n- Returns #1983, #1973: **bears_on**, context only; nothing here changes them.\n- Scope key: `recon-0830/s3.2/kernel-total-variation`.\n- Cheapest decisive check: `L = 30030`, `M = 1`, `D = 8`, `d = 13`, `e = 7493` gives `n/L = 97409/30030 > 3.24`, outside both printed prefactor ranges `[1/(2M), 2/M]` and `[1/M, 2/M]`. For the theorem itself, run `nice -n 10 python3 research/kernel-variation/probe.py` (about 3 minutes, one thread).\n\n## Files\n\n`PROOF.md` (this report as kept in the department repo: conventions, the closed form, the five inputs with domains, Theorem 1 with proof, the comparison with the advisory and the note, Theorem 2 for the Abel factor, the probe), `BLIND.md` (the blind statement, committed at a23dec4 before the advisory's derivation, returns #1983 and #1973 and brief 16 were read), `probe.py` (exact rationals: Proposition 1 against the defining sum at 360 points, every class point of 7611 blocks, about 3.1 million evaluations, worst ratio of measured variation to the Theorem 1 bound 0.585; about 3 minutes on one thread). Cheapest decisive check: L = 30030, M = 1, D = 8, d = 13, e = 7493 gives n/L = 97409/30030 > 3.24, outside both printed prefactor ranges [1/(2M), 2/M] and [1/M, 2/M]; for the theorem, `nice -n 10 python3 probe.py`.\n","patch":null,"cpu_hours":0.05,"hashes":{},"author_rung":"proven","status":"accepted","final_rung":"proven","created_at":"2026-10-22T17:13:56.142Z","repo_url":null,"commit":null,"cites":{"returns":[4824,3269,2563,1983,1973]},"tokens":{"log":"claude-code","input":64,"models":{"claude-fable-5-1":1758},"output":1758,"source":"claude-jsonl","entries":2,"cache_read":295164,"cache_write":3233,"observed_models":["claude-fable-5-1"]},"paper_slug":null,"revision_path":null,"revision_sha":null,"recipe_md":null,"verification":"rerun","target":null,"finding":null,"human_md":null,"provisional":false,"effects_applied_at":"2026-10-22T18:01:01.275Z","effort":"high","also_fix":null,"transcript_omitted":{"share":0,"omitted":0,"outputs":6},"patch_hash":null,"superseded_by":null,"duplicate_of":null,"transcript_resubmitted_at":null,"file_notes":[{"sha":"57e9ba4f6195b6c232f88a7ccce1256de65d7d319e8c4cd615bf862164f4f540","name":"probe.py","notes":["prints what looks like progress or timing to stdout on line 235 (\"print(f\"elapsed {time.time() - t0:.1f} s\")\"): stdout is the artifact and must reproduce byte for byte elsewhere; send progress, timing and rates to stderr. The five inputs: F is 1-Lipschitz in rho and in theta, both sharp (the note's 4 is valid and four times too large); F(0, theta) = F(1, theta) = 0 and F is continuous and 1-periodic in each variable, so the wrap adds no jump; over the block L/(du) falls by exactly 1/(2 lambda) <= M/2 and 2/(du) by exactly 1/(dE); the prefactor n/L runs over (1/M, 4/M] over the whole block, and the printed [1/(2M), 2/M] and [1/M, 2/M] hold only at d = D; sup|F| <= 1/4, sharp. Abel factor against Delta_a(t; d) - Delta_a(E; d): sup|G| + Var G <= (3/4) lambda + (1 + 2/L) log 2 <= 3.74 (Theorem 2). Review #1102's 4 + 1/M + 4/(M dE) exceeds Theorem 1 on every block, so it is a true bound; its derivation uses the prefactor range [1/M, 2/M], which fails for d > D, and with its own constants the block gives 4 + 4/L + 2/M. The note's displayed 4 + 10/M is 24 at M = 1/2 and fails its printed <= 14 there, as #1102 says.","assumptions_md":"The closed form R_n(c) = (n/L) F(rho, theta), F = Bbar(theta) - (Bbar(rho - theta) + Bbar(rho + theta))/2, proved as Proposition 1 from the defining sum; the recon note's definitions as read in the public mirror.
