{"id":5469,"job_id":11059,"problem_id":1,"lane_id":null,"type":"measure","user_id":103,"model":"claude-opus-5-5","provider":"anthropic","report_md":"# Route 172: faithful cap cost c(k, d) stays positive at k = 25..46, d = 1..3 (c(46, 1) = 6.6e-5); no zero crossing for k = 12..46, and #5466's extrapolated zero near k = 30.5 fails\n\n## Result\n\nRung: **measured** (exact rational arithmetic, every quotient enclosed by exact bisection, directed decimals), with the instrument of #5466 run unchanged.\n\nOn the frozen schedule and the complete slot universe, the faithful cap cost c(k, 1) is **positive at every k = 25, 26, ..., 46**. No enclosure straddles zero: each has width 1e-10, and the smallest lower end is 0.0000660931 at k = 46.\n\n- **First k with c(k, 1) < 0: none in k = 25..46.** No crossing up to k = 46.\n- **Last k with c(k, 1) > 0: k = 46** (the last k run), c(46, 1) in [0.0000660931, 0.0000660932] (`out/cells/k46_d1.json`).\n- d = 2 and d = 3 were also run at all 22 values of k. All 44 cells are positive. c(46, 2) is in [0.0001203900, 0.0001203901] and c(46, 3) in [0.0001756723, 0.0001756724].\n- M1^cap is positive definite at all 66 cells.\n\nSo the route's question has a measured answer at d <= 3: **there is no crossing below k = 46**, and none at k = 46. The linear extrapolation in #5466 (a d = 1 zero near k = 30.5) failed: c(31, 1) = 0.0288. The descent slows instead of holding its pace. The drop per unit of k falls from 0.01787 (25 to 26) to 0.0000452 (45 to 46), and the ratio of consecutive drops falls steadily from 0.909 to 0.617. The cap almost stops biting. min I_cap/I_0 at d = 1 rises from 0.182 at k = 25 to 0.9985 at k = 46, so at k = 46 the cap removes at most 0.15 % of I_0 for any F in the d = 1 span.\n\nWhat happens past k = 46 is not settled by these cells. Extrapolation, not measurement: continuing the drops with the fitted falling ratio, c(k, 1) levels off at about +2.8e-6. Holding the last ratio (0.617) fixed instead makes c(k, 1) first negative at k = 51. Holding the largest of the last ten ratios (0.731) fixed makes it first negative at k = 49. d = 2 and d = 3 behave the same way (fitted ratio: limits +6.8e-6 and +9.0e-6; constant ratios: first negative at k = 49 to 52). The trend is too close to zero to call the sign beyond k = 46. Only cells at k > 46 can.\n\nAt fixed k, the order in d flips. c falls with d through k = 28 (as at k = 12..24 in #5466), is mixed at k = 29..31, and rises with d from k = 32 on. At k = 46, c is 0.0066 %, 0.0120 % and 0.0176 % at d = 1, 2, 3.\n\n**Lemma 1 (#5466, proven) and what a sign would mean.** No negative c appeared, so no uncapped-basis deficit bound is needed. `cap_cost.py` does not compute M_{k,eps}, so it prints no deficit bound M_{k,eps}/q_uncap - 1 in any case. The reading stands as #5466 states it. J_cap(F) = J_0(F 1_T) and I_cap(F) = I_0(F 1_T), so q_cap(k, d) <= M_{k,eps}. A negative c at fixed d would mean that the truncated functions F 1_T beat the untruncated span of the same degree, by at most M_{k,eps}/q_uncap(k, d) - 1. It would not mean that the cap helps. A positive c that is small, as here, means the cap removes little from the degree-d span. It says nothing about how close that span is to M_{k,eps}.\n\n**Bearing on route 172, and its limit.** c(46, d) <= 0.0176 % at d <= 3. That is below the 0.766735 % that #5324 section 2 quotes as the route's target. But the target is a statement about the k = 46, d = 17 span, where q_uncap = 3.9013805276 sits just above 1/A = 10000/2583 = 3.8714672861. At d <= 3 the span itself is far below 1/A: q_uncap(46, 3) = 3.2708787395 and q_cap(46, 3) = 3.2703041365. A small c at d <= 3 therefore does not bring q_cap(46, d) near 1/A. It does not test the 2.30 % point at d = 17 (#5324's figure, which I did not recompute and whose numerator universe I did not check). The rise of c with d at k = 46 (d = 1 to 3) points in the same direction as a 2.30 % value at d = 17. That is a three-point trend in d, not evidence about d = 17. Nothing here bears on G2, beta_2 or twin primes.\n\n## Control\n\nBefore the sweep, the control cell reproduces #5466's k = 24, d = 1 line in every field except `secs`:\n\n    $ nice -n 10 python3 ../route172-sweep/cap_cost.py --label route172-crossing-control-k24-d1 --ks 24 --ds 1\n    {\"k\": 24, \"d\": 1, \"n\": 2, \"num_universe\": 10, \"den_universe\": 3, \"polygons\": 601, \"M1cap_pd\": true, \"q_uncap\": [\"2.6994418540\", \"2.6994418541\"], \"q_cap\": [\"2.3536471729\", \"2.3536471730\"], \"c\": [\"0.1280985847\", \"0.1280985848\"], \"min_Icap_over_I0\": [\"0.1275659930\", \"0.1275659931\"], \"secs\": 22.54}\n\n#5466 (`research/route172-sweep/out/cells/k24_d1.json`) prints c = [0.1280985847, 0.1280985848] with secs 11.83. The output is `out/control_k24_d1.json`.\n\n## Method\n\nThe instrument is `research/route172-sweep/cap_cost.py`, called by path and not copied or edited. Its sha256 at run time was e4a22201a28858ba13367bab102921c1f43c870dbf940d14df8864b47be21409. That is both the hash the brief names and the version committed with #5466 (commit adb9efe; `git show adb9efe:research/route172-sweep/cap_cost.py | shasum -a 256` gives the same value). The definitions, the slot universe, the exact LDL bisection and the directed decimals are all #5466's, so see `research/route172-sweep/RESULT.md` for them and for Lemma 1.\n\n`run_crossing.sh cells D K1 K2` runs one process per cell under `nice -n 10`, at most 6 at a time through `xargs -P 6`. Each process is labelled `--label route172-crossing-k<k>-d<d>` and writes one JSON line to `out/cells/k<k>_d<d>.json` (via a `.part` file renamed on success). The runs were d = 1 at k = 25..36, then d = 1 at k = 37..46, then d = 2 at k = 25..46, then d = 3 at k = 25..46. `tabulate.py` prints the tables below from `out/crossing.jsonl`, and `extrapolate.py` prints the labelled extrapolation.\n\n## Per-cell table, k = 25..46, d = 1, 2, 3\n\n\"run time\" is the script's own `secs` field: wall seconds of one single-threaded process, on a Studio with load average 21 to 31 on 28 cores.\n\n| k | d | n | c(k, d) enclosure | sign | q_uncap | q_cap | min I_cap/I_0 | polygons | M1^cap PD | run time (s) |\n|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|\n| 25 | These are summed per-process wall times. Each process is single-threaded, so the sum is an upper bound on its CPU time (the control used 21.6 s user of 22.6 s wall). Wall clock for the whole run was about 30 minutes on 6 workers.\n- Load matters more than d here. The control cell took 22.54 s against 11.83 s in #5466, about 1.9 times. The d = 3 batch ran after the load average fell from about 31 to about 21, and its cells took less time than the d = 2 cells at the same k. For pricing, use #5466's unloaded ratios at k = 24 (d = 2 about 3.1 times d = 1, d = 3 about 4.5 times) together with the d = 1 column here.\n- Growth in k at d = 1: 29.6 s at k = 25 to 143.1 s at k = 46, about 7.8 % per unit of k under load. On that rate, d = 1 at k = 47..56 is about 2200 s of process time, about 9 minutes of wall time on 6 workers (two waves) under similar load. d = 2 and d = 3 over the same k cost roughly 3 and 4.5 times that.\n\n## Not run\n\n- k > 46 at any d. The trend does not settle the sign there (see the extrapolation), so this is the open part of the question.\n- d > 3: the instrument refuses it, and it is out of scope.\n- #5466's other controls (the nine review-1860 cells, the witness-slot numerator, Monte Carlo) were not rerun. Only the k = 24, d = 1 control was rerun, since the instrument is byte-identical.\n- No uncapped-basis deficit bound: no c was negative, and the script does not compute M_{k,eps}.\n\n## What this rests on\n\n- `cap_cost.py` and the definitions in `research/route172-sweep/RESULT.md` (from #1641, #3850, #1942 and #1972). As #5466 records, I did not open eprint 2026/1893 or the H1 <= 216 candidate, so the agreement of those definitions with the source paper remains **unconfirmed**.\n- The enclosures are rigorous for the objects the script defines. Each comes from the exact LDL test inside the script, and the decimals are directed. This run adds no independent check of the derivation of the functional. Separate code is not a separate reading, and this is the same code.\n- Not claimed: anything at k > 46 or d > 3, \"no crossing\" without the range, anything at k = 46, d = 17, and anything about G2, beta_2 or twin primes.\n\n## Regenerate\n\nFrom `research/route172-crossing`:\n\n    sh run_crossing.sh control          # out/control_k24_d1.json (about 12 to 23 s)\n    sh run_crossing.sh cells 1 25 46    # out/cells/k<k>_d1.json\n    sh run_crossing.sh cells 2 25 46    # out/cells/k<k>_d2.json\n    sh run_crossing.sh cells 3 25 46    # out/cells/k<k>_d3.json\n    sh run_crossing.sh table            # out/crossing.jsonl\n    python3 tabulate.py cells; python3 tabulate.py steps; python3 tabulate.py time\n    python3 extrapolate.py\n\n## Sources\n\n- #5466: `research/route172-sweep/RESULT.md`, `cap_cost.py`, `run_sweep.sh`, `out/cells/k24_d1.json`.\n- #5324 section 2 (the 0.766735 % target and the k = 46, d = 17 point): `research/sah-state/2026-10-22/returns/05324.md`.\n\n## Filing note\n\n- Route **172**. Examples: c(46, 1) = [0.0000660931, 0.0000660932]; c(46, 3) = [0.0001756723, 0.0001756724]; control c(24, 1) = [0.1280985847, 0.1280985848], which equals #5466.\n3. *Independent instrument at the cell nearest zero.* My full-universe numerator script is built on #5324's served library and does not use cap_cost.py; it is the instrument that matched c(31, 1) = 0.0288105614 in review 1916. It gives c(46, 1) = 6.6093156716e-5 in 741 s, inside the served enclosure. It also gives the witness-slot value of -1.861e-4 at the same cell, so at k = 46 the sign still depends on using the complete slot universe, as #5466 established.\n4. *Table.* out/crossing.jsonl has 66 rows. Every row has M1cap_pd true and 601 polygons, and the smallest lower end is 6.60931e-5. c falls strictly with k at each d. The report's descent figures reproduce: first step 0.01787, last step 4.52e-5, and the step ratio falls monotonically from 0.909 to 0.617 at d = 1 (d = 2: 0.939 to 0.650; d = 3: 0.931 to 0.668).\n5. *Labelling.* The extrapolation (extrapolate.py) is labelled as not measured. The report keeps its stated limits: nothing at k > 46 or d > 3, nothing at d = 17, nothing about 1/A or G2. It also states that it adds no independent check; this review supplies one at k = 31 (review 1916) and at k = 46, d = 1.\n\n**Rung.** Measured. The enclosures come from exact rational arithmetic in a deterministic script, the reruns reproduce them exactly, and a separate code path agrees at the most fragile cell.\n\n**What would falsify.** A row of crossing.jsonl that cap_cost.py does not reproduce; c <= 0 from a second instrument at any k = 25..46, d = 1..3 cell; or a numerator slot outside the e_i and e_i + e_j universe.\n\n**Attribution.** The return cites #5466, #5324, #1942, #1641 and #3850. #5469 already supplies the refutation of #5466's extrapolation (see open fix request 150624 on #5466 RESULT.md line 7).
