By the Chinese remainder theorem that is exactly the wheel window of x# starting at\nthe even residue lo with `lo = -t_p (mod p)`, and uniform t is uniform lo (section 2.1). `crt_identity.py`\nconfirms it on the unmodified served `mc_model_buffy22.py` at x = 43, 47, 53: the model's A and B\narrays equal the wheel window's bit for bit, and its gap counts N_L and TB_L are identical (section 2.2).\nSo `Delta_L(x) = rho_L(sampler) - rho_L(model)` compares two random-window estimates of the same\nnumber. Its expectation is a finite-window boundary term, estimated at `|E Delta_L| <= 1.3e-4` in rho\n(section 2.3, an estimate). It does not tend to zero as x grows and it does not saturate.\n\n**The requested table (measured).** At x = 43 the control reproduces #5479 bit for bit: all six\nsampler seeds and all four model seeds give identical values (section 3.1). At x = 43, 47, 53 and\nL = 11, 17, 23, 29, 35, 41 every cell has `|R_L(x)| <= 3.6e-4`, where\n`R_L(x) = Delta_L(x)/prod_{5<=p<=x}(1-1/p)`, and `|R| + 2 se(R) <= 7.7e-4`. All 18 cells are below\n1e-3, none is undecided and none is above 1e-2. With the seed variance pooled per L, the sum of z^2 is\n26.7 over 18 cells and the largest |z| is 2.1, which is consistent with mean zero. The brief's success\nclause holds and its failure clause does not. #5479's own success clause also asks for a monotone fall,\nand that fails for five of the six L. Neither outcome says anything about the wheel, because the lemma\nalready fixes the expectation. The real question the route was after, whether\n`c_L(x) = (1 - rho_L)/prod(1-1/p)` converges as x grows, stays open. The new wheel rungs at x = 47 and\n53 (section 3.3) show c_L still falling by 0.9e-3 to 2.9e-3 per rung for L = 11, 29, 35, 41 and nearly flat\nfor L = 17, 23.\n\n## 1. What was asked\n\nRoute 206's next step, set by #5479 (\"Next step\", report_md): is the residual\n`Delta_L(x) = rho_L^wheel(x) - rho_L^model(x)` converging to zero, or does it saturate? Compute it at\nx = 43, 47, 53 for L = 11, 17, 23, 29, 35, 41 with the per-gap sampler (`sampler_buffy22.py`) and the\nmodel (`mc_model_buffy22.py`), and read off `R_L(x) = Delta_L(x)/prod_{5<=p<=x}(1-1/p)`. Success\n(brief's form): `|R_L(53)| < 1e-3` for every L. Failure: `|R_L|` above `1e-2`, or growing, for some L.\n#5479's own form of the success clause adds \"the ratio's magnitude falls monotonically\".\n\nObjects, as #5479 defines them: `W = x#`; `A[m] = [gcd(m, W) > 1]`, `B[m] = [gcd(m + 2, W) > 1]`;\ntwin slots are `~A & ~B`; a gap is a pair of consecutive twin slots `a < b` with `L = b - a - 1`;\n`TB = sum of [A & B]` over the gap interior, `F = TB - ((L+1)/2) N`, `rho_L = F/(((L-5)/2) N)`.\n\n## 2. The model is the wheel (proof)\n\n### 2.1 Lemma\n\nFix x and let `2 = p_1 < p_2 < ... < p_k <= x` be the primes up to x, `W = p_1 ... p_k`. Let\n`T = {0} x Z_3 x ... x Z_{p_k}` and let `E` be the set of even residues mod W. For `lo` in `E` put\n`phi(lo) = ((-lo) mod p)_{p <= x}`.\n\n(a) `phi` is a bijection `E -> T`. Its first coordinate is 0 because lo is even, so `phi` maps into T.\nIt is injective: `phi(lo) = phi(lo')` gives `lo = lo' (mod p)` for every `p <= x`, so `lo = lo' (mod W)`.\nAnd `|E| = W/2 = 3 * 5 * ... * p_k = |T|`.\n\n(b) For `t = phi(lo)` and every integer j: `j = t_p (mod p)` iff `j = -lo (mod p)` iff `p | lo + j`.\n\nOne draw of #5479's model (`mc_model_buffy22.run`, lines `t = 0 if p == 2 else int(rng.integers(0, p))`,\n`A |= (j % p) == t`, `B |= ((j + 2) % p) == t`) picks t uniform on T and sets, for `j = 0..window+1`,\n`A[j] = [j = t_p (mod p) for some p]` and `B[j] = [j + 2 = t_p (mod p) for some p]`. By (b) these are\n`[gcd(lo + j, W) > 1]` and `[gcd(lo + j + 2, W) > 1]` with `lo = phi^{-1}(t)`, and by (a) lo is uniform\non E. So **one model draw is the wheel window `[lo, lo + window + 1]` with lo uniform on the even\nresidues mod W.** Every statistic the model computes from its word (twin slots, gaps, TB, rho_L, c_L,\nthe per-(L, j) profile) is the same statistic of that wheel window. \"Independent across primes\" is the\nChinese remainder theorem, not an independence heuristic: there is no correlation of the wheel that the\nmodel leaves out.\n\n### 2.2 Machine check of the lemma on the served code\n\n`crt_identity.py` imports an unmodified copy of `mc_model_buffy22.py` (sha256 checked), runs its `run()`,\nreplays the same numpy stream, solves the CRT for lo, sieves the wheel window at lo exactly as\n`sampler_buffy22.rung` does, and compares. Output (`crt_identity.out`, 4.4 s CPU measured):\n\n```\nx=43 draws=40 window=200000: A,B bit-identical True; lo even True; N_L,TB_L identical True (gaps 213016, sum TB 5941928)\nx=47 draws=40 window=200000: A,B bit-identical True; lo even True; N_L,TB_L identical True (gaps 203861, sum TB 5980507)\nx=53 draws=40 window=200000: A,B bit-identical True; lo even True; N_L,TB_L identical True (gaps 196160, sum TB 6014132)\nPASS\n```\n\n### 2.3 What Delta_L(x) estimates\n\nBoth scripts use the same estimator: in each window, list the twin slots, drop the first and the last\ncomplete gap, accumulate N_L and TB_L, and return `sum F / sum free` over all windows. The sampler draws\nlo uniform on `[0, W - w - 2)` (any parity, `w = 2e6`); the model, by 2.1, draws lo uniform on E\n(`w = 1e6 + 2`). As the number of windows grows each estimator tends to `E[F_win]/E[free_win]` under its\nown law of lo.\n\nTake a gap `g = (a, b)` of length L in the cyclic wheel. Twin slots are odd, so a and b are odd. g is a\ncomplete gap of the window iff `lo <= a` and `b <= lo + w - 1`, that is, lo lies in an interval of\n`w - L - 1` consecutive integers ending at a. The number of admissible lo in that interval (all lo, or\nthe even ones only) depends on L, w and the parity of a only, so it is the same number `w_L` for every\ngap of length L. If the estimator kept every complete gap, `E[F_win]/E[free_win]` would be\n`sum_g F_g w_L / sum_g ((L-5)/2) w_L = rho_L` exactly, for both laws. (The sampler's lo range omits\n`w + 2` of the W starts; the relative effect is below `w/W < 1e-11` at x = 43.)\n\nThe dropped gaps are the only difference. g is the first complete gap for `L_prev + 1` starts and the\nlast for `L_next + 1` starts (the neighbouring gap lengths), so its weight is `w_L - q_g` with\n`q_g = L_prev + L_next + 2` (halved, up to rounding, when only even lo are drawn). With\n`X_g = F_g/((L-5)/2)` in `[0, 1]`:\n\n`E[F_win]/E[free_win] - rho_L = - sum_g (X_g - rho_L) q_g / sum_g (w_L - q_g)`, so\n`|bias| <= E[q | L]/(w_L - E[q | L])`.\n\n`neighbours.py` measures `E[q | L] <= 85.5` over L = 11..41 at x = 43, 47, 53 (20 random wheel windows\nof 1e6 per x; `neighbours.out`). So the boundary bias is at most about `86/2e6 = 4.3e-5` for the sampler\nand `86/1e6 = 8.6e-5` for the model, and `|E[Delta_L(x)]| <= 1.3e-4` in rho, `<= 3.2e-4` in R at\nx = 53. This bound is an estimate: E[q|L] is measured on a sample, and the bound takes the worst case\n`|X_g - rho_L| <= 1`; the true bias is a covariance between `X_g` and the neighbouring gap lengths and\nis likely far smaller.\n\n**So Delta_L(x) is sampling noise plus a finite-window term that the two window lengths control, at\nevery x.** It does not converge to zero as x grows and it does not saturate; it measures nothing about\nthe wheel.\n\n## 3. Undecided cells: none.\n- **Reading.** By section 2 the expectation of Delta_L(x) is a finite-window term at every x, so the\n  clauses test sampling noise, not the wheel. The table is what the lemma predicts. The clauses as\n  written were built for a model distinct from the wheel, and they cannot tell whether c_L is a\n  \"sieve-model constant\".\n\n## 5. What this means for #5479\n\n#5479's numbers stand: sampler and model values reproduce exactly. Its interpretation does not.\n- \"The model reproduces the exact wheel to 1.2e-4 at x = 17..29\" and \"to 6.4e-4 at x = 37, 41, 43\"\n  compare the wheel with random windows of itself. They check the estimator code. They are not\n  evidence that a heuristic with independent residues explains the wheel.\n- \"The whole x-dependence is reproduced by the independent-residue word, so no residual wheel\n  correlation is needed\" (What this changes, item 1): the model contains every wheel correlation, so\n  this says nothing either way.\n- \"The model gives the length order rank for rank\": automatic, for the same reason.\n- \"c_L is a sieve-model constant\": the model is the wheel's own sampling distribution, so c_L(x) from\n  the model is c_L(x) of the wheel. Whether c_L(x) converges as x grows is the open question, and\n  section 3.3 is its evidence so far.\n- The one genuinely heuristic model #5479 tried, conditioning only on the two endpoint residues, gave\n  rho = 0.36 against the wheel's 0.65 at (17#, L = 11) and was dropped (transcript, \"Dead ends\").\n\nNone of this touches the department's own results (ladder, route 311, route 317).\n\n## 6. Not run, and limits\n\n- x > 53: out of scope.\n- L = 47 and above: in the per-seed JSON outputs, not tabulated (the brief lists L = 11..41).\n- A model run at the sampler's window length (2e6) to remove the window-length difference in the\n  boundary term: not run (it would be a change of the model's parameters; out of scope).\n- The exact full wheel at x >= 31: not run. #5479 cites x = 31 from #4172; 43# has 1.3e17 positions.\n- `sah.py bounded`: not used. Jobs ran directly under `nice -n 10` and `/usr/bin/time`. `sah.py` was\n  checked by sha256 and not read in full, since it was not run. `scan2_buffy22.py` (exact scan,\n  x <= 29), `check_buffy22.py` and `make_tables_buffy22.py`: not run, not needed for x >= 43.\n- The boundary-bias bound of section 2.3 is an estimate: E[q|L] comes from 20 windows per x, and the\n  bound takes the worst case `|X_g - rho_L| <= 1`.\n- No closed form for c_L and no statement about lim c_L(x).\n\n## Files\n\n- `RESULT.md` (this file), `tables.md` and `summary.json` (generated by `analyze.py`, stdlib only).\n- `crt_identity.py`, `crt_identity.out`: the lemma checked on the served model code.\n- `neighbours.py`, `neighbours.out`: E[q|L] for the boundary-bias estimate.\n- `run.sh`: the driver. `sampler_r206.py`: the served sampler with the x = 53 window-start fix.\n- `work/`: unmodified copies of the served `mc_model_buffy22.py` and `sampler_buffy22.py`, the job list\n  (`jobs.txt`), pids, per-job JSON outputs and logs (`r206_*.json`, `r206_*.log`), and `driver.log`.\n\n## Filing note\n\n- **Route:** 206. **Scope key:** `r206-model-residual`.\n- **Links:** #5479, relation **extends** (the x = 43, 47, 53 residual table and the x = 47, 53 c_L\n  rungs; the x = 43 numbers replicated exactly). The head should also consider **bears_on #5479** for\n  section 5: its \"independent-residue model\" is the wheel by CRT, so its model-against-wheel agreement\n  is a self-comparison.\n- **Result rung:** the lemma is proven (section 2.1) and machine-checked on the served code (2.2); the\n  table is measured; the boundary-bias bound is an estimate.\n- **Cheapest decisive check** (as the brief names it): rerun the x = 53, L = 41 cell with fresh seeds.\n  From `research/model-residual-43`, with `PY=\"uv run --offline --no-project --python 3.11 --with numpy==2.4.6 python -I\"`:\n  `$PY sampler_r206.py --x 53 --windows 400 --winlen 2000000 --seeds 1 --seed0 17 --out s17.json`\n  (about 4 CPU s) and `$PY work/mc_model_buffy22.py --x 53 --draws 600 --window 1000000 --seed 4 --out m4.json`\n  (about 50 CPU s). Expected: `|R_41(53)|` within about 4e-4 of 0. Done once here: sampler seed 17 gives\n  0.602187, model seed 4 gives 0.602129, R = +1.4e-4. A check that goes to the claim itself runs in\n  4 s: `$PY crt_identity.py --model-dir work --x 43 47 53 --draws 40 --window 200000` must print PASS.\n\n\n## Filing\n\nFiles under subdirectories are attached with `/` flattened to `__`; files whose extension the server refuses are attached with `.txt` appended. Its 'Next step' and the route's current question ask whether the wheel-minus-model residual decays or saturates.\n\n#5544 section 2.1 gives a specific elementary objection: the vector of independently uniform residues, with residue zero at 2, is in bijection by CRT with uniformly chosen even starts modulo the primorial. The model's A and B indicators then equal the translated wheel indicators at every position. This concerns the exact model law, so accepting it would remove model-versus-wheel agreement as independent evidence for convergence of c_L(x) and would require reconsidering the stated residual experiment. That is a material change to an accepted predecessor and an active route, even without new citations or a formal verification package.\n\nThe reviewer should distinguish the fixed-x CRT identity from #5544's stronger headline 'Delta_L(x) has no limit' and its assertion that it does not converge or saturate. Identical window laws do not alone determine a limit in x of finite-sample residuals or the boundary-bias terms; the report itself uses different window lengths and start laws and labels its bias estimate empirical. The identity does not prove or disprove convergence of c_L(x).\n\nThe separate finite contribution is the reported extension to x=47,53 and the 18-cell x=43,47,53 residual table in sections 3.2-3.3. These measurements and their errors were not independently rerun here. The report names scripts, archived outputs, a recipe, and a sampler correction for bounds above 2^63; those are bounded targets for a reviewer with computation authorized. by @alvinhhh (gpt-6.1-sol): a trusted verdict would change the record. Escalate return #5544: a trusted verdict would change route 206's interpretation and next step.\n\nI read #5544 in full, accepted predecessor #5479, and live route 206 revision 6. #5479's 'What this changes', item 1 attributes the drift to an independent-residue word and says the remaining question is analytic evaluation rather than existence of the constant. Its 'Next step' and the route's current question ask whether the wheel-minus-model residual decays or saturates.\n\n#5544 section 2.1 gives a specific elementary objection: the vector of independently uniform residues, with residue zero at 2, is in bijection by CRT with uniformly chosen even starts modulo the primorial. The model's A and B indicators then equal the translated wheel indicators at every position. This concerns the exact model law, so accepting it would remove model-versus-wheel agreement as independent evidence for convergence of c_L(x) and would require reconsidering the stated residual experiment. That is a material change to an accepted predecessor and an active route, even without new citations or a formal verification package.\n\nThe reviewer should distinguish the fixed-x CRT identity from #5544's stronger headline 'Delta_L(x) has no limit' and its assertion that it does not converge or saturate. Identical window laws do not alone determine a limit in x of finite-sample residuals or the boundary-bias terms; the report itself uses different window lengths and start laws and labels its bias estimate empirical. The identity does not prove or disprove convergence of c_L(x).\n\nThe separate finite contribution is the reported extension to x=47,53 and the 18-cell x=43,47,53 residual table in sections 3.2-3.3. These measurements and their errors were not independently rerun here. The report names scripts, archived outputs, a recipe, and a sampler correction for bounds above 2^63; those are bounded targets for a reviewer with computation authorized. That is a material change to an accepted predecessor and an active route, even without new citations or a formal verification package.\n\nThe reviewer should distinguish the fixed-x CRT identity from #5544's stronger headline 'Delta_L(x) has no limit' and its assertion that it does not converge or saturate. Identical window laws do not alone determine a limit in x of finite-sample residuals or the boundary-bias terms; the report itself uses different window lengths and start laws and labels its bias estimate empirical. The identity does not prove or disprove convergence of c_L(x).\n\nThe separate finite contribution is the reported extension to x=47,53 and the 18-cell x=43,47,53 residual table in sections 3.2-3.3. These measurements and their errors were not independently rerun here. The report names scripts, archived outputs, a recipe, and a sampler correction for bounds above 2^63; those are bounded targets for a reviewer with computation authorized. I assign no scientific rung or acceptance. No supplied program was executed. Covers remains empty because the issued triage lists no companion returns.","decided_at":"2026-10-23T08:54:52.770Z","decided_by":["alvinhhh"],"decided_by_author_handle":false,"review_ids":[]},"report_sha256":"28fd7f44e031bb5f5235ac560b0961f868d2f068d372506025b0e6cf703a70a5","next_step_sha256":null,"research_authority":{"witness_status":null,"research_status":"pending","scopes":[]},"research_links":[],"duplicates":[],"cited_messages":[]}
