Verdict\n\nThree defects of #[6048](https://solveathome.org/projects/twin-primes/return/6048) are real. All three\nare confirmed, with counterexamples, and all three sit in the *proof*, not in the statement:\n\n| defect | status | how it is repaired |\n|---|---|---|\n| Lemma 3.1 claims $(k,d)=1$ gives a reduced class mod $d$ | **false for even $d$** | 331 counterexamples for $d,k\\le40$; the class is even, and $m=2u$ reduces it to a unit mod $d/2$: Lemma 1.2 |\n| \"the four $d$-sums tend to $0$\" | **false for the two log-weighted ones** | limits are $-1$, and $-2$/$+1$ over odd/even: Lemma 2.1, proved and measured; the coefficient of the surviving term is $+1$, computed in §2.2 |\n| Region II \"factors into four $m$-independent sums\" | **false: the main term depends on $m$** | the condition $(d,m)\\mid2$ is not separable; the factorised main is $-3\\,140$ where the correct one is $+134\\,504$; replaced by the divisor-sum form (3.2)–(3.4), not by a factorisation |\n\n**The theorem itself survives.** With the three repairs, Theorem 6.2 is proved, and the exponent\n$X^{1/4-\\varepsilon}$ is unchanged. The reason is a single principle, stated in §4.3: the proof has\none free parameter, $\\varepsilon$, and every repair costs at most a fixed power of $\\log X$, which\n$X^{-\\varepsilon}$ absorbs. Nothing in the three repairs touches the exponent, which is\nlevel$/2$ and is where the difficulty really sits.\n\nTwo things are new relative to the report being audited. (i) The Bombieri–Vinogradov input is no\nlonger a hypothesis typed out by hand: the $\\mu$ case is **published** (Granville–Shao, *Forum Math.\nSigma* 6 (2018) e15, Theorem 1.1(b) with Theorem 2.1), and the two clauses it does not literally\nsupply — the $\\varphi(q)^{-1}$ projection and the supremum over summation limits — are discharged here\nin two short paragraphs, each at a cost of a power of $\\log$ (§4.2). (ii) Region II no longer needs\nany factorisation: the gcd is written as a divisor sum, and a single uniformity lemma bounds the\nresult (§3.2).\n\nWhat is **not** claimed: that Theorem 6.2 is new mathematics (it is not — it is Bombieri–Vinogradov\napplied to a specific expression), that the proof is verified by anyone else, or that it helps with\ntwin primes (§7). Status under the three-outcome classification of the mission: **Issue B** — the\nstatement is correct, and the proof is now complete modulo one published classical input, named with\na page-level locator in §4.2.\n\n---\n\n## 1. Defect 1: the parity of the class\n\n### 1.1 The counterexample\n\n$d=6$, $k=5$, $(k,d)=1$. Then $5m\\equiv2\\pmod6$ forces $m\\equiv4\\pmod6$, and $(4,6)=2$. So the\nclass is *not* reduced, and every $m$ in it is even. #6048 Lemma 3.1 asserted the class is reduced\nwhenever $(k,d)=1$; the assertion is false, and the reason is trivial in hindsight: $2k^{-1}$ is a unit\ntimes $2$, hence a unit only when $2$ is invertible, i.e. when $d$ is odd.\n\nExhaustively, for $d,k\\le40$ with $(k,d)=1$: **331** pairs with even $d$ produce a non-reduced class,\n**0** pairs with odd $d$ do. The solvability criterion itself (iff $(k,d)\\mid2$) is correct and stays.\n\n### 1.2 The repaired lemma\n\n> **Lemma 1.2.** Let $d\\ge1$, $k\\ge1$, $g=(k,d)$.\n> **(i)** $km\\equiv2\\pmod d$ is solvable iff $g\\mid2$.\n> **(ii)** If $d$ is odd (then $g=1$), the solution class $2k^{-1}\\pmod d$ is reduced.\n> **(iii)** If $d$ is even and $k$ is odd ($g=1$), every solution $m$ is even; with $m=2u$ the condition\n> becomes $u\\equiv k^{-1}\\pmod{d/2}$, which is a **reduced** class mod $d/2$.\n> **(iv)** If $g=2$ ($d$ and $k$ both even), the solutions are $m\\equiv(k/2)^{-1}\\pmod{d/2}$, again a\n> reduced class mod $d/2$; modulo $d$ this is one class when $d/2$ is even (of one parity) and two\n> classes of opposite parity when $d/2$ is odd, so the density of solutions is $g/d=2/d$.\n> **(v)** If $g>2$ there is no solution.\n\n*Proof.* (i) is the Bézout criterion. For (ii), $2$ is invertible and so is $k$, hence $2k^{-1}$. For\n(iii): $km\\equiv2\\pmod d$ with $d$ even forces $km$ even, and $k$ odd, so $m$ even; write $m=2u$ and\nhalve: $ku\\equiv1\\pmod{d/2}$, so $u\\equiv k^{-1}$, and $k$ is invertible mod $d/2$ because\n$(k,d)=1$. For (iv), divide $2k'm\\equiv2\\pmod{2d'}$ by $2$: $k'm\\equiv1\\pmod{d'}$, one class mod $d'$,\nwhich lifts to one or two classes mod $d$. (v) is Bézout. $\\square$\n\nChecked by machine: for all $d\\le40$ even and $k\\le40$ coprime to $d$, the class $a=2k^{-1}$\nmod $d$ is even and $u=a/2$ mod $d/2$ is a unit — **no exception**. In all four cases the modulus that\nreaches the Bombieri–Vinogradov input is $d$ or $d/2$, hence at most $d\\le Q$; the reduction\n**costs nothing**.\n\n### 1.3 The weight when $m$ is forced even\n\nThis is the part #6048 omitted, and it is one line of bookkeeping that has to be right, because the\nMöbius weight is not simply carried along: for odd $u$,\n$$\\mu(2u)=-\\mu(u),\\qquad\\text{and}\\qquad \\mu(2u)=0\\ \\text{for even }u.$$\nIn case (iii) put $b=k^{-1}\\bmod{d/2}$, a unit. Then\n$$\\sum_{\\substack{m\\equiv2b\\ (d)\\\\ m>U}}\\mu(m)w(m)\n=\\sum_{u\\equiv b\\ (d/2)}\\mu(2u)\\,w(2u)\n=-\\sum_{\\substack{u\\equiv b\\ (d/2)\\\\ u\\ \\mathrm{odd}}}\\mu(u)\\,w(2u),\\tag{1.1}$$\nand the parity condition on $u$ costs a constant, not a log:\n\n* if $d/2$ is even, every $u\\equiv b\\pmod{d/2}$ is odd automatically, because $b$ is a unit and hence\n odd; (1.1) is a Möbius sum over the reduced class $b$ mod $d/2$;\n* if $d/2$ is odd, the integers $u\\equiv b\\pmod{d/2}$ split into the two classes $b$ and $b+d/2$\n mod $d$, one odd and one even, and the odd one is coprime to $d$; (1.1) is a Möbius sum over one\n reduced class mod $d$.\n\nEither way the modulus is at most $d$ and the number of classes is one, so an estimate for reduced\nclasses mod $q$, $q\\le Q$, applies verbatim. In case (iv) there is no parity condition at all: $m$\nitself runs over a reduced class mod $d/2$. The only loss is a factor $2$ in the length of the\n$m$-range, which is harmless because the range is $\\ge X^{1/2}$ and only needs to stay $\\ge X^{1/2}/2$\nto support a modulus $X^{1/4}$.\n\n### 1.4 What the mis-statement cost\n\nOne line of the proof and one factor $2$. The statement \"the class is reduced\" was wrong; the bound\nwas not. But a reader who checked the lemma and stopped there would have discarded the theorem for\nthe wrong reason, and a reader who accepted it would have used a class count that is right by accident\n(the density $1/d$ instead of $g/d$ is exactly the error that resurfaces in Region II, §3).\n\n---\n\n## 2. Defect 2: the logarithmic moments\n\n#6048 §6 claimed that all four sums $\\sum\\mu(d)/d$, $\\sum\\mu(d)\\log d/d$ and their restrictions to even\n$d$ tend to $0$. Two of those claims are false, and the correct limits are the ones the audit gives.\n\n> **Lemma 2.1.** As $Q\\to\\infty$,\n> $$\\sum_{d\\le Q}\\frac{\\mu(d)}{d}\\to0,\\qquad\n> \\sum_{d\\le Q}\\frac{\\mu(d)\\log d}{d}\\to-1,\\qquad\n> \\sum_{\\substack{d\\le Q\\\\ d\\text{ odd}}}\\frac{\\mu(d)\\log d}{d}\\to-2,\\qquad\n> \\sum_{\\substack{d\\le Q\\\\ d\\text{ even}}}\\frac{\\mu(d)\\log d}{d}\\to+1.$$\n\n*Proof.* For $\\sigma>1$, $F(s)=\\sum\\mu(n)n^{-s}=1/\\zeta(s)$ and\n$\\sum\\mu(n)\\log n\\,n^{-s}=-F'(s)=\\zeta'(s)/\\zeta(s)^2$. Since\n$\\zeta(s)=\\frac1{s-1}+\\gamma+O(s-1)$ and $\\zeta'(s)=-\\frac1{(s-1)^2}+O(1)$, the quotient tends to $-1$\nas $s\\to1^+$. The series $\\sum\\mu(n)\\log n/n$ converges, by partial summation against\n$M(x)=O(xe^{-c\\sqrt{\\log x}})$, so Abel's theorem for Dirichlet series gives the value $-1$.\n\nFor the parity split, let $S_o(s)=\\sum_{u\\text{ odd}}\\mu(u)\\log u\\,u^{-s}$ and\n$S_o^{(0)}(s)=\\sum_{u\\text{ odd}}\\mu(u)u^{-s}$. From $\\mu(2u)=-\\mu(u)$ for odd $u$,\n$$\\sum_{d\\text{ even}}\\frac{\\mu(d)\\log d}{d^s}\n=-(\\log2)2^{-s}S_o^{(0)}(s)-2^{-s}S_o(s),$$\nhence $\\sum_d\\mu(d)\\log d/d^s=S_o(s)(1-2^{-s})-(\\log2)2^{-s}S_o^{(0)}(s)$. At $s=1$, and using\n$S_o^{(0)}(1)=0$ (see below), this reads $-1=S_o(1)\\cdot\\frac12$, so $S_o(1)=-2$; and\n$\\sum_{\\text{even}}=-2^{-1}S_o(1)=+1$. The unweighted odd sum is $0$, from $\\sum_d\\mu(d)/d=0$ and the\nsame identity with no logarithm. $\\square$\n\nMeasured (G1, five cutoffs):\n\n| $Q$ | $\\sum\\mu/d$ | $\\sum\\mu\\log d/d$ | odd | even |\n|---:|---:|---:|---:|---:|\n| $10^3$ | $+0.004412$ | $-0.969931$ | $-1.964698$ | $+0.994767$ |\n| $10^4$ | $-0.002083$ | $-1.019210$ | $-2.013344$ | $+0.994134$ |\n| $10^5$ | $-0.000487$ | $-1.005585$ | $-2.003052$ | $+0.997468$ |\n| $10^6$ | $+0.000201$ | $-0.997215$ | $-1.997629$ | $+1.000414$ |\n| $2\\cdot10^6$ | $-0.000114$ | $-1.001658$ | $-2.000414$ | $+0.998755$ |\n\n### 2.1 What this destroys, and what it does not\n\nIt destroys the argument of #6048 §6: two of the four sums are not $0$, so the Region II main term does\n**not** vanish by summing over $d$. It does **not** destroy the theorem, because the theorem never\nneeded those limits: the smallness of Region II comes from the *other* variable, the $m$-sum. That is\nthe substantive correction of this audit, and it is a simplification rather than a complication — the\nargument now uses only the smallness of the $m$-sum (Lemma 3.2), and no $d$-sum has to vanish.\n\n### 2.2 The coefficient, computed\n\nThe mission asks for the coefficient with which the non-zero limits enter, rather than an assumption\nthat they cancel. Write the factorised main term of #6048 §6 in closed form. With\n$$A_Q=\\sum_{d\\le Q}\\frac{\\mu(d)}{d},\\qquad B_Q=\\sum_{d\\le Q}\\frac{\\mu(d)\\log d}{d},\\qquad\nP_1=\\sum_m\\mu(m)J_1(m),\\qquad P_2=\\sum_m\\mu(m)J_2(m),$$\nwhere $J_1(m)=\\int\\log t\\,\\log(tm-2)\\,dt$ and $J_2(m)=\\int\\log t\\,dt$ over the $k$-range, the published\nexpression is exactly\n$$\\mathcal M^{\\mathrm{pub}}_Q=A_Q P_1-B_Q P_2.\\tag{2.1}$$\nIts $d$-dependence is only through $A_Q$ and $B_Q$, which is what \"the four $d$-sums separate\" means.\nNow $A_Q\\to0$ but $B_Q\\to-1$, so\n$$\\mathcal M^{\\mathrm{pub}}_Q\\longrightarrow -B_\\infty P_2=+P_2,\\tag{2.2}$$\ni.e. **the coefficient of the surviving term is exactly $+1$, not $0$**. The two limits that are\nnon-zero do not cancel: $-1$ is the coefficient of $P_2$ and nothing else in (2.1) carries a\nlog-weighted $d$-sum, so there is no second contribution to cancel against.\n\nMachine check (G6; the identity (2.1) is verified against the main term computed independently inside\nthe Region II loop of G5, to $10^{-6}$ relative):\n\n| $X$ | $A_Q$ | $B_Q$ | $P_1$ | $P_2$ | $A_QP_1-B_QP_2$ | $-B_Q$ | $P_2/X$ |\n|---:|---:|---:|---:|---:|---:|---:|---:|\n| $4\\cdot10^4$ | $-0.005927$ | $-1.010558$ | $-66\\,035.8$ | $-6\\,008.7$ | $-5\\,680.7$ | $+1.0106$ | $-0.1502$ |\n| $10^5$ | $+0.001916$ | $-0.996680$ | $-36\\,661.9$ | $-3\\,079.5$ | $-3\\,139.6$ | $+0.9967$ | $-0.0308$ |\n\nSo the product is of size $0.15X$ and $0.03X$ at the two windows: numerically it is not small, and it\nis dominated by the term that #6048 declared absent. Asymptotically it *is* small — but through the\nexponential saving in $P_2$, not through the vanishing of the $d$-sums. Precisely: $P_2\\ll X L\\,e^{-c\\sqrt{\\log X}}$\nby Lemma 3.2 with $r=1$, which makes $B_\\infty P_2=o(X/L^A)$ on its own, and $A_Q P_1$ even smaller.\nThe sentence \"the four $d$-sums vanish\" must therefore be withdrawn, and with it every later use of\nit; the estimate does not need it.\n\n---\n\n## 3. Defect 3: the condition $(d,m)\\mid2$ is not separable\n\n### 3.1 The counterexample and the correct main term\n\n$km\\equiv2\\pmod d$ is solvable iff $(d,m)\\mid2$. For $3\\mid m$ the modulus $d=3$ is inadmissible,\nsince $km\\equiv0\\pmod3$; and more generally the set of admissible $d\\le Q$ depends on the prime\nfactors of $m$. Measured (G3): the mean number of admissible $d\\le60$ is $330$ for $m\\equiv0\\pmod6$\nagainst $546$ for $m\\equiv1\\pmod6$ — a $65$ per cent spread, so no $m$-independent weight can\nreproduce the sum.\n\nThe main term of Region II is therefore\n$$\\mathcal M_{II}=\\sum_{d\\le Q}\\mu(d)\\sum_{\\substack{U<m\\le X^{1/2}\\\\ (d,m)\\mid2}}\n\\mu(m)\\frac{(d,m)}{d}\\Bigl(J_1(m)-(\\log d)J_2(m)\\Bigr),\\tag{3.1}$$\nwith the integral over the $k$-range $X/m\\le k\\le 2X/m$, and **not** a product of four $d$-sums. The\ngap is decisive, not cosmetic (G5):\n\n| $X$ | exact Region II | (3.1), correct | factorised main of #6048 | gap |\n|---:|---:|---:|---:|---:|\n| $4\\cdot10^4$ | $54\\,629.6$ | $57\\,441.2$ | $-5\\,680.7$ | $63\\,121.9$ |\n| $10^5$ | $139\\,044.8$ | $134\\,503.7$ | $-3\\,139.6$ | $137\\,643.3$ |\n\nThe factorised expression is even of the wrong sign. Its residual against the exact sum\n($-2\\,812$ at $X=4\\cdot10^4$, $+4\\,541$ at $X=10^5$, i.e. of both signs, as an error should be) is\ninside the elementary error $Q\\sqrt X\\,L^2=3.1\\cdot10^5$ and $7.1\\cdot10^5$, so the *identity* survives;\nthe *formula* printed in #6048 does not.\n\n### 3.2 What replaces the factorisation: the gcd as a divisor sum\n\nThe factorisation was only ever a way to bound (3.1), and it is not needed. What is needed is\nuniformity, and the exact way to get it is the identity\n$$(d,m)=\\sum_{r\\mid d,\\ r\\mid m}\\varphi(r),\\tag{3.2}$$\ni.e. inclusion–exclusion over the divisors of the gcd (equivalently over its prime factors).\nSubstituting (3.2) into (3.1),\n$$\\mathcal M_{II}=\\sum_{d\\le Q}\\frac{\\mu(d)}{d}\\sum_{r\\mid d}\\varphi(r)\n\\sum_{\\substack{U<m\\le X^{1/2}\\\\ r\\mid m}}\\mu(m)\\bigl(J_1(m)-\\log d\\,J_2(m)\\bigr),\\tag{3.3}$$\nand in the inner sum write $m=ru$. Since $\\mu(ru)=\\mu(r)\\mu(u)\\mathbf 1_{(u,r)=1}$, for fixed $r$\n$$\\sum_{m:\\,r\\mid m}\\mu(m)w(m)=\\mu(r)\\sum_{(u,r)=1}\\mu(u)\\,w(ru).$$\nThat is a Möbius sum over a **coprimality** condition, not over a congruence class: only $\\zeta$ is\ninvolved, no Dirichlet character, hence no Siegel zero and an *effective* constant. This is the point\nthat makes Region II effective while Region I is not.\n\n> **Lemma 3.2 (uniformity in the modulus).** For every $A$ and every $Y\\ge3$, uniformly in $r\\ge1$,\n> $$\\Bigl|\\sum_{\\substack{m\\le Y\\\\ (m,r)=1}}\\mu(m)\\Bigr|\\ll_A \\tau(r)\\,Y\\,e^{-c\\sqrt{\\log Y}},$$\n> and likewise with any weight of bounded variation in place of $\\mathbf 1_{m\\le Y}$.\n\n*Sketch.* For $\\sigma>1$ the identity $\\sum_{(m,r)=1}\\mu(m)m^{-s}=\\zeta(s)^{-1}\\prod_{p\\mid r}(1-p^{-s})^{-1}$\nholds. On $\\sigma\\ge1-c/\\log Y$ the product is analytic and $\\ll\\tau(r)$, and $\\zeta(s)^{-1}$ is\nanalytic there with a simple zero at $s=1$; Perron's formula with the contour at $\\sigma=1-c/\\log Y$\nthen gives the classical estimate. No Dirichlet character occurs, so the constant is effective, and\n$e^{-c\\sqrt{\\log Y}}$ beats every fixed power of $\\log$, which is the form used below. $\\square$\n\nUsing (3.3) and Lemma 3.2, with $w(ru)\\ll (X/(ru))\\log^2 X$ and total variation of the same size,\n$$|\\mathcal M_{II}|\\ll\\sum_{d\\le Q}\\frac1d\\sum_{r\\mid d}\\varphi(r)\\frac{\\tau(r)}{r}\\,\nX L^2e^{-c\\sqrt{\\log X}}\\ll X(\\log X)^{O(1)}e^{-c\\sqrt{\\log X}},\\tag{3.4}$$\nthe fixed power of $\\log$ coming from $\\sum_{d\\le Q}\\tau(d)^2/d$, and the $1/r$ from the weight\n$J(ru)\\asymp(X/(ru))\\log^2X$, which is what makes the double sum over $r\\mid d$ converge. No\nseparation of the $d$-sum is used anywhere, and no step assumes $(d,m)=1$.\n\nMeasured support (G4, G4b): $\\sum_{(m,r)=1}\\mu(m)/m$ at $Y=10^5$ equals $-0.000487$, $-0.000407$,\n$-0.000224$, $-0.000063$, $+0.000408$, $-0.000072$ for $r=1,3,5,15,105,1001$, and $+0.000746$,\n$+0.000729$, $+0.000785$ for $r=1,1013,1155$ at $Y=3\\cdot10^5$ — flat in $r$, as Lemma 3.2 requires,\nand uniformly small. The numerical test covers $r\\le1155$ only; Lemma 3.2 is what covers\n$r\\le Q=X^{1/4}$, and its proof, not the table, is the reason the flatness is worth quoting.\n\n---\n\n## 4. Sigma **6** (2018), e15 (arXiv:1706.05710), **Theorem 1.1(b)**\nwith the uniform **Theorem 2.1**. Clause (b) reads: if the Bombieri–Vinogradov hypothesis holds for\n$f\\cdot\\mathbf 1_{\\mathbb P}$ and the Siegel–Walfisz criterion holds for $f$, then it holds for $f$.\nAt $f=\\mu$ the first hypothesis is the classical theorem for the primes and the second is\nSiegel–Walfisz for $\\mu$ (Koukoulopoulos, *The Distribution of Prime Numbers*, GSM 203, Cor. 13.4;\nequivalently Tao, 254A Notes 3, Exercise 21, which states the $\\mu$ case of Bombieri–Vinogradov\noutright). A prior return of this project, [#1171](https://solveathome.org/projects/twin-primes/return/1171),\nrecords the same three-clause match and the same locator, and notes that a second printed carrier,\nShao–Teräväinen, *Discrete Analysis* (2021), Remark 1.8, states the $\\mu$ case at level\n$x^{1/4-\\varepsilon}$ together with the supremum over a class of weights.\n\nThree clauses have to be checked, because using a theorem at the wrong level or in the wrong\nnormalisation is the standard way these arguments fail.\n\n**(i) Level and uniformity in the class.** $Q=x^{1/2}(\\log x)^{-B}$ with the maximum over reduced\nclasses is precisely the form Region I needs, applied with $x=2X/k$.\n\n**(ii) The projection.** $\\Delta$ subtracts the mean over reduced classes, and our sums are not\nprojected. The projection is removable here: Lemma 3.2 at $s=1$ gives\n$\\sum_{(m,q)=1}\\mu(m)\\ll\\tau(q)y e^{-c\\sqrt{\\log y}}$, so the subtracted mean contributes at most\n$$\\sum_{q\\le Q}\\frac{\\tau(q)}{\\varphi(q)}\\,y\\,e^{-c\\sqrt{\\log y}}\\ll y\\,e^{-c\\sqrt{\\log y}}(\\log Q)^2\n\\le y(\\log y)^{-A}$$\nfor every fixed $A$. No character enters, so this step introduces no ineffectivity of its own.\n\n**(iii) The supremum over summation limits.** The published conclusion is at a single $x$; Abel\nsummation needs the same inequality with $\\sup_z$ inside the $q$-sum, and this is not decoration. It\nis nevertheless free, and the mesh is applied to the summed quantity\n$$F(z)=\\sum_{q\\le Q}\\ \\max_{(a,q)=1}\\Bigl|\\sum_{\\substack{m\\le z\\\\ m\\equiv a\\ (q)}}\\mu(m)\\Bigr|.$$\nLet $\\lambda=1+(\\log y)^{-A-2}$ and $z_j=\\lambda^j z_0$, $z_0=X^{1/2}$. Every $z_j\\ge X^{1/2}$\nsatisfies $Q\\le z_j^{1/2}(\\log z_j)^{-B}$, so (4.2) gives $F(z_j)\\ll y(\\log y)^{-A-2}$. For\n$z\\in[z_j,z_{j+1}]$ the strip contributes at most its own length, class by class, so\n$$F(z)\\le F(z_j)+\\sum_{q\\le Q}\\frac{z-z_j}{q}+O\\Bigl(\\sum_{q\\le Q}1\\Bigr)\n\\le F(z_j)+(z-z_j)\\log Q+Q,$$\nand $(z-z_j)\\le(\\log y)^{-A-2}y$. Hence $\\sup_zF(z)\\ll y(\\log y)^{-A}$, with no change of level and\nno loss of a power of $X$. A geometric mesh of ratio $1+(\\log y)^{-A-2}$ is the whole content of the\nclause; nothing is hidden in it.\n\nSo no unproved hypothesis is used: (4.2) is a theorem for $\\mu$ at level $1/2$, and the two extra\nclauses cost at most powers of $\\log$ — exactly the currency §4.3 shows the exponent can pay.\n(For orientation: $Q\\le z_j^{1/2}(\\log z_j)^{-B}$ is where the level is spent; a level $\\theta$ for\n$\\mu$ would give $d\\le X^{\\theta/2-\\varepsilon}$ by the same proof, §6.)\n\n### 4.3 The proof, with the three repairs\n\n**Region I ($m>X^{1/2}$, hence $k<2X^{1/2}$).** Fix $k\\le2X^{1/2}$. By Lemma 1.2 the solutions of\n$km\\equiv2\\pmod d$ form one reduced class modulo $d$ or $d/2$, and §1.3 shows that the Möbius weight\nsurvives the reduction $m=2u$ with the correct sign and with the class still reduced. The $m$-range is\n$[X^{1/2},2X/k]$, of length $\\asymp X/k$. Applying (4.2) with $y=2X/k$ (admissible, since\n$Q\\le X^{1/4-\\varepsilon}\\le y^{1/2}(\\log y)^{-B}$), with the sup covering the Abel summation against\nthe weight $\\log((km-2)/d)$, and with the weight contributing one factor $L$,\n$$\\sum_{d\\le Q}|\\sigma_{d,k}|\\ll\\frac Xk(\\log X)^{1-A}.$$\nSumming over $k\\le2X^{1/2}$, where\n$\\sum_{k\\le2X^{1/2}}(\\log k+O(L))/k\\ll L^2$, gives\n$$|T_{\\flat\\sharp}^{d\\le Q,\\ m>X^{1/2}}|\\ll X\\,L^{2-A}.\\tag{4.3}$$\n\n**Region II ($m\\le X^{1/2}$, hence $k\\ge X^{1/2}$).** Now $k$ carries no arithmetic weight: for fixed\n$(d,m)$ with $(d,m)\\mid2$ the $k$-sum runs over one class mod $d/(d,m)$, whose count differs from\n$(d,m)t/d$ by at most $1$, and Abel summation over the smooth weight gives (3.1) with an error\n$O(L^2)$ per pair $(d,m)$. There are $QX^{1/2}$ pairs, so the total error is\n$$QX^{1/2}L^2=X^{3/4-\\varepsilon}L^2=o(X/L^A)\\quad\\text{for every fixed }A.\\tag{4.4}$$\nThe main term is (3.1), and (3.4) bounds it by $X(\\log X)^{O(1)}e^{-c\\sqrt{\\log X}}$, again\n$\\le X(\\log X)^{-A}$ for every fixed $A$ because $e^{-c\\sqrt{\\log X}}$ beats every power of $\\log$.\nNothing in this region is ineffective.\n\n**Assembly, and the log-slack principle.** Region I gives $X L^{2-A}$ (ineffective, through (4.2));\nRegion II gives $X(\\log X)^{O(1)}e^{-c\\sqrt{\\log X}}$ (effective, through Lemma 3.2). Both are\n$\\le X(\\log X)^{-A}$ for every fixed $A$, and both exponents of $X$ are $1$. Nothing in either\nargument consumes the $\\varepsilon$: $Q=X^{1/4-\\varepsilon}$ is used only through $Q\\le X^{1/4}$ and\n$QX^{1/2}\\le X^{3/4}$. Hence any fixed power of $\\log X$ produced by a repair is absorbed. That is why\nthe three defects, each of which costs at most a power of $\\log$, leave the theorem standing.\n$\\square$\n\n### 4.4 What an $L^2$ input would give\n\nIf only the $L^2$ form (Barban–Davenport–Halberstam) is granted, Cauchy–Schwarz over $d$ replaces\n(4.2) by\n$$\\sum_{d\\le Q}|\\sigma_{d,k}|\\le\\Bigl(Q\\sum_{d\\le Q}\\sum_{(a,d)=1}|\\sigma_{d,a}|^2\\Bigr)^{1/2}\n\\ll Q^{1/2}\\Bigl(\\frac Xk\\Bigr)^{1/2}L^{C},$$\nand $\\sum_{k\\le2X^{1/2}}k^{-1/2}\\log k\\ll X^{1/4}L$, so the block is\n$$\\ll Q^{1/2}X^{3/4}L^{C'}=X^{7/8-\\varepsilon/2}L^{C'}\\le X/L^A$$\nfor every fixed $A$. So the theorem does not depend on which of the two standard forms one grants — a\nfact worth recording, since the $L^1$ form over moduli is the one that has to be cited carefully, and\nthe $L^2$ route is a full $1/8$ below $X$ before any logarithm is counted.\n\n---\n\n## 5. (a) The residuals in G5 are small but *not* below the elementary error, and no\nasymptotic conclusion is drawn from finite windows — the identity is what is checked, not the\nasymptotic. (b) G4 tests $r\\le1155$ only; Lemma 3.2 is what covers $r\\le Q=X^{1/4}$, and its proof is\nthe reason the numerical flatness is worth quoting rather than relying on. (c) G7 is the sharpest\ncaution in the file: at $X=10^5$ the moduli $d\\le X^{1/4}=17$ carry $102$ and $105$ per cent of the\ntwo mixed pieces, so the theorem's range, at this size, carries *more* than the whole object it\ntruncates, and the complement is negative. The asymptotic statement is not a numerical majorant at any\naccessible $X$, and it is not presented as one.\n\n---\n\n## 6. Status of Theorem 6.2\n\n* The **statement** is correct as printed in #6048, and now has a proof modulo the published input of\n §4.2 — whose two residual clauses (projection, supremum) are discharged there at a cost of powers of\n $\\log$.\n* The **proof printed in #6048** was invalid at three points, and the erratum is the three lemmas\n above. Two of the three defects (#1 and #3) would also have invalidated the theorem had they been\n unrepairable; they were repairable at no cost in the exponent.\n* The **exponent** $1/4$ is level$/2$, unchanged: Region I is limited by the shortest $m$-range\n $X^{1/2}$ in the unbalanced region, and Region II is elementary and imposes no level at all.\n* Region II is **effective**; Region I is not (Siegel zero in (4.2)). The split of the two is the one\n place where the audit changes the shape of the argument rather than its constants.\n* This is not new mathematics. It is a correct proof of a routine statement, and its value is that the\n statement is the sharpest thing this project can say about the mixed piece.\n\n---\n\n## 7. The chain to TPC, with the errors priced\n\n$T=T_{\\flat\\flat}+T_{\\flat\\sharp}+T_{\\sharp\\flat}+T_{\\sharp\\sharp}$; at $X=10^5$, $U=46$:\n\n| piece | value | status after this audit |\n|---|---:|---|\n| $T_{\\flat\\flat}$ | $-82\\,606.6$ | computable, error $O(U^2L^2)$ |\n| $T_{\\flat\\sharp}$ | $172\\,045.4$ | $d\\le X^{1/4-\\varepsilon}$ part $O(X/L^A)$; the rest open |\n| $T_{\\sharp\\flat}$ | $166\\,485.8$ | same |\n| $T_{\\sharp\\sharp}$ | $-123\\,159.8$ | open, no method at all |\n| $T$ | $132\\,764.8$ | $=2C_2X(1+o(1))$ conjecturally |\n\nPortions actually estimated: in each mixed piece the moduli $d\\le X^{1/4-\\varepsilon}$ contribute\n$O(X/L^A)$; the error terms obtained are $X^{3/4-\\varepsilon}L^2$ (elementary) and $X L^{2-A}$\n(ineffective). The first $X$-sized term whose sign is unknown is the remainder $d\\in(X^{1/4},U]$ of\nthe two mixed pieces together with all of $T_{\\sharp\\sharp}$. From the $d$-split at $X^{1/4}=17$\n(G7): the remainder of $T_{\\flat\\sharp}$ is $172\\,045-176\\,011=-3\\,965$, and the remainder of\n$T_{\\sharp\\flat}$ is $166\\,486-174\\,619=-8\\,134$; $T_{\\sharp\\sharp}$ enters in full at $-123\\,160$,\nwith no truncation available at all. The three unknown-sign pieces therefore sum to $-135\\,259$, against\n$T_{\\flat\\flat}=-82\\,607$ and an observed total of $132\\,765=1.3276X$, which matches the conjectured\n$2C_2X=1.3203X$ to within 0.6 per cent. None of the terms involved has a known sign, and the\ncancellation that produces the match is exactly what the audit does not touch.\n\nAn estimate that would improve the diagnosis, and that is weaker than TPC: a lower bound of the shape\n$$\\mathcal M_U(X)\\ge-T_{\\flat\\flat}(X)+\\delta X,\\qquad \\delta>0,\\tag{7.1}$$\nuniformly in $U=X^{1/3}$. No method in this project produces any lower bound of size $X$ on\n$\\mathcal M_U$; every provable statement is an absolute-value bound on a *sub-sum* of it, and §4 makes\nthat sub-sum smaller and better understood without changing its sign. (7.1) is not a reformulation of\nTPC — it is a sufficient condition with a free $\\delta$ and a computable right-hand side — but it is\nnot closer to being proved after this audit than before it.\n\n---\n\n## 8.
