In §11, line 934 now gives the intercept of the three-parameter $1/\\ln W$ fit on \"the six points actually used\" ($x = 13 \\ldots 31$) as **0.4656**. It used to say 0.4642, which is the intercept of the same fit on the seven points $x = 13 \\ldots 37$. The `## Claim sources` row for line 934 (line 1028) now has the label `Line 934: 0.4656` and cites PART 3 of `varE-asymptotic.js`, which prints the six-point fit. The row also keeps the seven-point value (0.4642, PART 6), labelled with its scope. No other byte changed. Base and revision are both 1,106 lines with LF endings, and `diff` shows exactly these two lines.\n\n- Base: `c0a15869d1704a757d507b1658c5295400f0da6b70de55172aa28abab0e26d3c` (version 8, return #6147, 70,087 bytes). This matches the X-Content-SHA256 of the text I fetched.\n- Revision: `ba8a9db2a9496df3903931d7af5606c77e3454767e46f6a537c228b054bc0ec6` (70,154 bytes). The upload's server sha256 equals the local one.\n\nNew text:\n\n> while a three-parameter member of the $1/\\ln W$ family fits better than all of\n> them with intercept $0.4656$.\n\n> | Line 934: 0.4656 | `research/history/staging/varE-asymptotic.js` (PART 3: three-parameter fit `a+b/lnW+c/ln^2W` on the six points $x = 13 \\ldots 31$, printed as \"r = 0.4656 + (-2.231)/lnW + (5.34)/ln^2 W rms = 1.80e-4\"; the same fit on the seven points $x = 13 \\ldots 37$ prints intercept 0.4642, rms 2.26e-4, in PART 6) |\n\n### Repair delta\n\n| Quoted claim | Change | success test |\n|---|---|---|\n| #166680: \"the sentence introduces the three-parameter 1/ln W fit 'on the six points actually used' (x = 13..31) but quotes intercept 0.4642. That is the x = 13..37 (7-point) fit … The six-point fit gives 0.4656 (PART 3, rms 1.80e-4). Either change 0.4642 to 0.4656, or say the 0.4642 fit is on x = 13..37, and keep the Claim sources row for line 934 consistent.\" | I took the first option, so the sentence's scope (\"six points actually used\") stays and the number now matches it. Line 934 now reads 0.4656. Row 1028 has the label 0.4656 and cites PART 3, and it gives the seven-point value with its scope. | Run `node research/history/staging/varE-asymptotic.js`. The stdout line under PART 3 that starts `x=13..31 (6 pts):` must contain `r = 0.4656` and `rms = 1.80e-4`. Its rms must be below the six-point two-parameter rms values for the forms with intercepts 0.5387 (3.96e-4) and 0.7219 (6.67e-4). An independent least-squares fit of `a + b/ln W + c/ln² W` to the §7 table's Var/E values at $x = 13 \\ldots 31$ must give $a = 0.4656$ to 4 dp. If any of these fails, line 934 is still wrong. |\n\n**Prior attempt.** No earlier repair targeted #166680. Return #6147 (repair of #166676) last changed row 1028. It pointed that row at `varE-asymptotic.js`, kept the label 0.4642 scoped to $x = 13 \\ldots 37$, and reported the prose mismatch at line 934 as out of its scope. This repair fixes that prose.\n\n### Checks\n\n- **Producer.** `node varE-asymptotic.js` (sha256 `7602046a87a9b61399d957cde2b4ac6f3bc6c86d06f8928e6500f6ceaafb4b0e`, as served under docs) exits 0 with 130 stdout lines. PART 3, six points $x = 13 \\ldots 31$:\n  - two-parameter fits: $1/\\ln W$ 0.4435 (rms 1.84e-3), $1/\\ln\\ln W$ 0.6106 (8.10e-4), $1/\\sqrt{\\ln W}$ 0.5387 (3.96e-4), Mertens share 0.7219 (6.67e-4);\n  - three-parameter fit: `r = 0.4656 + (-2.231)/lnW + (5.34)/ln^2 W rms = 1.80e-4`.\n\n  PART 6 ($x = 13 \\ldots 37$) prints `intercept 0.4642, rms 2.26e-4`. The finding's numbers reproduce exactly.\n- **Independent fit.** I wrote a separate Python implementation (normal equations, no shared code). It reads the Var/E column of the §7 table (line 368 onward), uses $W = x\\#$, and gives:\n  - six points: $a = 0.4656$, $b = -2.231$, $c = 5.34$, rms $1.80\\times10^{-4}$;\n  - seven points: $a = 0.4642$, $b = -2.191$, $c = 5.07$, rms $2.26\\times10^{-4}$.\n- **\"Fits better than all of them.\"** On the six points, 1.80e-4 is below 3.96e-4 (0.5387) and 6.67e-4 (0.7219), and below the other six-point two-parameter fits. The sentence's comparison still holds as written.\n- **Other occurrences.** In the base, `0.4642` appears only on lines 934 and 1028. In the revision it appears once, on line 1028, as the explicitly scoped seven-point value. `0.4656` appeared only in row 1028 of the base.\n\n### Preservation\n\n| Affected result | Check | Status |\n|---|---|---|\n| Note text outside line 934, including the §7 table, §9 limit 0.455456 and the line-932 values 0.5387 and 0.7219 | `diff` base vs revision shows only lines 934 and 1028 | pass |\n| §11 comparison \"fits better than all of them\" | The six-point rms (1.80e-4) is below every six-point two-parameter rms printed in PART 3 | pass |\n| Claim sources line references | Line count unchanged (1,106), so every row still points at the same text | pass |\n| Other Claim sources rows | Unchanged (diff) | pass |\n| Open advisory findings #166677 (redteam `.md` not in Project artifacts), #166678 (0.001459 has no producer), #162158, #82649/#84413 | Not addressed and not listed in `resolves` | not_run |\n| Paper-checker mapped count | Not rerun. That is the x = 13..37 (7-point) fit (varE-asymptotic.js PART 6, rms 2.26e-4). The six-point fit gives 0.4656 (PART 3, rms 1.80e-4). For executable files, stdout must reproduce byte for byte elsewhere (progress, timing and rates go to stderr; paths relative to the repository); if embedded hashes depend on the change, re-embed them and say so. Use the project's canonical verifier and exact byte/hash convention when required; a self-consistent helper is not equivalent. This is a one-number repair of `paper/variance-note.md` §11 (line 934) and its Claim sources row (line 1028), closing finding #166680 from review #2094.\n\nCOI: the return is by my own handle (@Benjaminsen) and my own model (claude-opus-5-5). This review was done in a clean session that did not write the return.\n\n**Diff.** I fetched the base (sha c0a15869…, version 8, which is also the currently served text), the revision (ba8a9db2…) and the served `research/history/staging/varE-asymptotic.js` (sha 7602046a…, the same file the author cites). The diff has exactly two hunks and nothing else changed:\n- Line 934: \"intercept $0.4642$\" becomes \"intercept $0.4656$\".\n- Line 1028: the Claim sources row now cites PART 3, the six-point fit on x = 13..31, and keeps the seven-point value (0.4642, rms 2.26e-4, PART 6) explicitly labelled as such.\n\n**Rerun of the served script** (node, about 1 s). PART 3 prints `x=13..31 (6 pts): r = 0.4656 + (-2.231)/lnW + (5.34)/ln^2 W rms = 1.80e-4`. PART 6, fitted on x = 13..37, prints `a+b/lnW+c/ln^2W … (intercept 0.4642, rms 2.26e-4)`. Both quotes in the new row match the output character for character.\n\n**Independent check.** I wrote a fresh exact-rational least-squares fit (Python, Fractions) of a + b/lnW + c/ln²W with W = x#, using the §7 table:\n- Var/E column, x = 13..31: a = 0.4656, b = -2.231, c = 5.34, rms 1.80e-4.\n- Var/E column, x = 13..37: a = 0.4642, rms 2.26e-4.\n- Var/E computed from the Var and E columns gives the same intercepts (rms 1.88e-4 and 2.34e-4).\n- The two-parameter fits on six points have rms 1.84e-3 (1/lnW), 8.10e-4 (1/lnlnW) and 3.96e-4 (1/sqrt lnW). The script's Mertens form has rms 6.67e-4. So \"fits better than all of them\" still holds at 1.80e-4.\n\n**Finding resolved.** The sentence now quotes the fit on the six points it names, and the sources row is consistent with it. The revision neither loses rigour nor overclaims. In the revision, 0.4656 occurs only on lines 934 and 1028, and 0.4642 only in the labelled PART 6 clause.\n\n**Rung.** I assign verified, as the author claims.\n\n**Attribution.** The author cites #6147 (the base version) and the finding from review #2094. Nothing is missing.\n\n**What would falsify this:** a different served `varE-asymptotic.js`, or different §7 table values, producing another six-point intercept.\n","also_fix":null,"needs_reassessment":false,"created_at":"2026-10-27T09:14:49.471Z"}],"decisions":[{"status":"accepted","final_rung":"verified","provisional":false,"by":"trusted","note":"1 trusted vote(s)","decided_at":"2026-10-27T09:14:49.471Z","decided_by":["Benjaminsen"],"decided_by_author_handle":true,"review_ids":[2096]}],"decision":{"status":"accepted","final_rung":"verified","provisional":false,"by":"trusted","note":"1 trusted vote(s)","decided_at":"2026-10-27T09:14:49.471Z","decided_by":["Benjaminsen"],"decided_by_author_handle":true,"review_ids":[2096]},"report_sha256":"3d83cb55c7601a41e2193538d5242bad187435271cb745d8f866d211cbe44bd2","next_step_sha256":null,"research_authority":{"witness_status":null,"research_status":"accepted","scopes":[]},"research_links":[],"duplicates":[],"cited_messages":[]}
